Perhaps they ran out of O's in their signage letter box. Where did the virus originate before it was relabeled to COVID19? Why have they never changed the name of the Spanish Flu ... it did not originate in Spain. WHO cares?

I like to think we have become more aware of the importance of language, and the way we use it. We now have people with Special Needs - instead of idiots, imbeciles and retards. We now try to use inclusive language instead of expecting everyone to identify with language suited to white males. In today's world we know it works better to deflect discrimination if we refrain from labelling things according to the origin.

I don't know about the latter, but the former is much more commonly known as Rubella.
Besides being somewhat racist, using nicknames for illnesses runs to the same sort of problems one gets when referring to herbs by their common name, not their latin name. People get poisoned, etc.

Very true. Although I note that "special" is starting to acquire a certain negative connotation in the vernacular. I predict that Special Needs will be replaced before too long.

Rita - I haven't heard anyone saying German Measles since my kids were small. It is called Rubella. I have never heard of the other disease you mentioned so looked it up. It is transmitted via creatures, not people.
I have no idea what you mean by 'a culture of cancellations, firings etc. etc..'. Is it in reference to the two diseases you mentioned? No family I have met has been ostracised because their kid got Rubella! I don't know anyone who contracted the other disease so can't address the possibility of them having social difficulties.

"cancel culture" per the definitions I'm seeing, refer to the practice of "not naming" people who have misbehaved. And I actually sort of support it. If I never see or hear that bloody Orange Cheeto it will be too soon.
In CBC culture, this would mean that any piece played by the esteemed Montreal Symphony, which they often do, because it's an amazing orchestra, in the years it was led by C, they just omit director name; every other time, it's Montreal Symphony, led by Kent Nagano, or an older director, because C was director for 25 years, during which their most enduring modern recordings were made.

Why am I not surprised. In the case immediate to me the near and dear has been named first and last ... but the allegations are made by a disgruntled group of anonymous former employees with no actual evidence to support their claims. And yet ... they are allowed to make demands that have to be answered to ... at great expense and psychological detriment to anyone that might be singled out for 'cancelling'. In the end I am confident that the anonymous group will find that their bullying tactics will backfire on them ... but in the meantime ... imagine yourself being called a racist and having to defend yourself ... would your place of employment be up to the task of protecting you or might they throw you under the bus.
