CTV is reporting 183 active for BC - Tracking every case of COVID-19 in Canada
It would be nice if the reporting was consist. I'm really not a fan of BC's dashboard site.
There are a few extras I wish were reported here, but in comparison I find the way the data is displayed is much easier to find most information.

Under the graph on the dashboard page there are day by day charts listed. The ones I have been posting. I've been going off of those (the BC Centre for Disease Control seems the most sensible place to look rather than CTV) because the articles are confusing. Sometimes I wonder if they're even reporting actual data or just anecdotal info.

Looking at news from Brazil. All videos I have seen, medical personal at the testing sites have medical masks, none have a face shield. Same for pictures from African countries. There will be lots of sick personal.

Even here, masks have been easier to get than face shields, though last I heard (via those responsible for acquiring PPE at work) surgical masks are okay now, it's just N95s that remain a problem.

But I don't see active cases there. With Alberta I can narrow it down to sub-health region, although the historical information isn't provided for each day, it's just the recent numbers for total, active, recovered & deaths.

If you do the math for total cases ever and subtract the recovered cases, and deaths, the active cases are either in hospital or still recovering out of hospital. If they are in hospital and/ or ICU they'd be listed.

You're right. I think I punched in something wrong before. It's 173 cases in home recovery in the whole province. Unless we were seeing big spikes in overall hospitalization of the gen pop and covid was not considered (as far as I know there has been no large spike in deaths and hospitalization of the gen pop occurring while covid cases were slowing), then there isn't a big risk at all. They wouldn't overlook any big spike in hospitalization and deaths - we would know something was wrong and they would be checking those patients for covid and potential contacts.

Can active virus lose its potency in hosts it does infect, if it's finding fewer hosts?
I'm not sure what you mean by potency. Mutations are random and they are most likely to occur during replication. So the more times the virus is replicated in a host (as they don't self-replicate) the more chances there are for mutations. So that is dependent on the number of people who have the virus (as well as other animals) and the viral load. Mutations that make it easier to contract the virus are more likely to spread.

And is the only way to resist mutations, to have already contracted and recovered, with some immunity?
Preventing it from spreading is the best way to achieve that. It needs cells to replicate, don't let it get to new cells and it's way to replicate is going to end. So basically what we have been trying to do - avoiding new people from getting it.

Ontario had its best day ever in number of tests (28,335) and best day in number of confirmed cases (182) in quite a while. Hopeful numbers as we move into stage 2. My company was talking about returning after Canada Day but has now pushed that to September. Not sure how I feel. I was kind of looking forward to going back and, realistically, the office is open and I could go back earlier. We have a co-op student in my department starting in July so some of my team are going back then anyhow.

I feel like this is not strong evidence at all. Things get altered in terms of schedules and things like that - cars/day over multiple days over a single time snapshot. Even better, without putting in much effort would be if China would just be honest about patients getting treatment in the emergency room or for acute issues. That would reduce a fair bit of noise of say some meetings delaying doctors seeing their regular patients and playing catchup one day. A bit of effort would be doing a some analysis as to the reason for seeking care, should still be fairly simple.

I'm not sure if this belongs here or somewhere else. I'm open to feedback.

Recently there have been reports of Americans visiting Canada. They are able to use a loophole and tell border officials they are travelling to Alaska. Meanwhile, they are not taking the guidelines/restrictions seriously. This was the latest post I've seen on FB.

"To all my Friends and family on Salt Spring and all other parts of Canada please be aware that this stupid loophole allowing Americans to travel “to Alaska “ lets them freely cross the Canadian border. No real screening done. Salt Spring was inundated today, many of whom are definitely Americans. Our sales numbers today were up between 75%-100% compared to last Friday. Please stay safe, wash your hands frequently and wear your masks if you have them. If anyone knows who to complain about this to, please leave a link in the comments. Take care."

This pisses me off. We're in good shape here on the island. Other parts of Canada are getting better. I hope this doesn't set us back.

Is that a Canadian loophole?
They should at least be in self quarantine and monitored even if they are just passing through shouldn't they? They're having quite the problem with the virus on the other side of your border.

Better still, fly to Alaska.

This would piss me off too!
