Saw on tv they have trained dogs to sniff out civil 19. Should be very handy for airports

i have walked through a Dallas a “dog zone”. You lined up and walked in pairs at a sedate pace but not stopping. A guy and a dog walked up and down passing you. About every thirty minutes the dog changed ( it took a long time to get through this line)

then you still had to go through the regular security checks, this was just an extra drug sniffing dog

It’s an interesting idea. they already can detect low blood sugars for diabetics and some cancers. And of course drugs and food. Plus all the other things they do to help people

toronto has a really cute little beagle who wanders around casually and detects food in luggage.

That's too much. We don't want a perennial - nor a permanent - US style security apparatus for this damn virus. The numbers don't support it. It’s more contagious than it is deadly. At the end of all this we still have to parse out what the real threat is vs. an excuse for more State security apparatus.

I will not support sniffing dogs, etc etc, in my area, because 5 people from nursing homes died. I’m sorry they died from a nasty disease but the whole world needs to stay alive...and actually live. Not simply exist in a semi-isolated purgatory forever. And overall, where public health is not very healthy, that’s where the money needs to be spent. The economy needs to change and be more bottom up. Security apparatus does not equal public health. This is where I draw the line and agree with Rita. ...but I do support a vaccine! I would rather have mandatory vaccine than ongoing and evolving security to deal with this. Beware of those trying to have both.

With low blood sugar though, it's not like they directly detect someone's sugar level. It's some of the chemicals that come with the physiological changes. Even with that, it's questionable if they can really sniff that out, from what I have read, the reliability is pretty low and it may be more they are picking up on behavioural cues rather than sniffing it out. May be that some dogs can and some it's the behaviour cues.

I don't see how they could differentiate between someone with really mild COVID-19 symptoms and another similar illness. And if someone is totally asymptomatic, I don't see how they would pick up on that (although they don't really have COVID-19 then is my stance, they are just positive for the virus). If someone has more serious symptoms, I do think a dog may be able to differentiate between that and say a flu or other coronavirus infection as there are differences going on with the body, but at that point someone isn't likely to be flying.

It will be interesting to see

kimmio, I expect if this comes about with dogs, they will be used at airports. Just like drug sniffing dogs. Not wandering through neighbourhoods
It’s a waste of money. They need to put it into public health...to strengthen communities and address problems that neoliberal privatization and poor worker protections caused. Besides, this wasn’t “the big one”. The powers that be can spend billions on building security apparatus and have the public bend over backwards like trained seals...then, when everything is bankrupt and common society is in decay, how will they handle the next one? Will “the big one” then be compounded by essentially having crippled the whole world’s ability to function?

Not really understanding that Kimmio. If the virus continues to spread. If immunity doesn’t last. If vaccines are not effective or not taken by the majority of people, it would be a way to assess people before they get into an airport or onto a plane and infect everyone

I had a friend who had diabetes. She had a little shitzu dog. He wasn’t trained on anything, but he would wake her up at night when her blood sugars were low. Then he got sick and she had to put him down.
The following year, she died in her sleep.

Yes, I also don’t see the difference in dogs looking for illegal drugs, meat or if they are used to sort out sick people. Though, I think it would be cheaper to just look for people with a temp, which could be done by a machine.
I find it much more disturbing to have to go through the full body machine to go on a flight.
However, the other question that came up for me, is if we allow sick people on flights in general. What if someone got sick on vacation and just wants to get home to get treatment because they don’t have travel insurance.
I also would not want to sit next to someone with a bronchitis, non Covid related, for six hours. Should there be special places on a plane for these cases or should people just not be allowed to travel?

I hate getting in a plane and hearing someone cough all flight. And this are obvious illnesses. Then you get unvaccinated people who are not yet showing symptoms. ....... I expect it will be quite a while before people get comfortable on planes. And it’s hard to imagine how the cruise industry recovers. They have always had issues with flu type illnesses

I had wondered why Canada wasn’t testing temperatures at the airports. Then I read that during SARS they spent a lot of money setting up scanners and taking temperatures....... and did not find one case of illness. So they decided it was not money well spent

now That trees are budding in Ontario, everyone has the seasonal sniffles. That is totally annoying during this time where we all worry about serious illness

I can do this temporarily, to stop this wave and maybe the next one. If that becomes the case, though, if this virus starts chronically popping up every year, we still have to live. Just don’t let really frail elderly and immune compromised people fly without a doctor’s note. Everyone else will have to take risks. Because what if people are asymptomatic? What if the dogs and all the expensive machines are not trained or made to to sniff out the next big virus...we can’t go on and on living in a state of State imposed constant viral hyper-vigilance forever when most people get mild symptoms. Sorry. That’s not living. That’s the walking dead.

We need a vaccine AND antiviral meds that work, not to throw money away on fancy surveillance tech.

I suspect people will go all in on this until we get some retrospection and/ or they realize in their own lives how bad it is to just let life be dictated to them under the excuse of a virus. I’m not blaming Gates. I’m not a 2030 nutcase. I just don’t want to see the whole world get irrational and throw life away indefinitely over a virus that most people don’t get really sick from.

Yeah, I've heard lots of positive anecdotes too, but studies seem to give wide ranges, I suspect a fair bit is the dogs themselves and then training with individuals may make a difference too ie. alerting might not be as accurate if trained with someone else, I never looked into it.

Long term the issue I see with travel is those with certain conditions - some people always have a temperature, some people always have a cough, etc. Even if the dogs are found to be reliable for COVID-19 will there be false positives due to some chronic conditions? I hope that we can get better with rapid, handheld tests for a variety of things.

Still, I think people will have to be allowed to take risks. And...maybe it’s nursing home conditions, both living and working conditions, that need some monitoring and improving. The majority of deaths came from nursing homes in Canada. Even most elderly who contracted it here on Van Is. survived and recovered! There are a lot of elderly people here. The majority who tested positive were in their 70’s! Followed by 50-59. People who live here are not superhuman...so what helped? Look at the positives that can be done.

What happened in Quebec at that nursing home was almost genocidal. Places where living and working conditions are horrible need to be addressed. That’s where the outbreaks have mostly been. And people shouldn’t have to work or live anywhere unsafe (particularly if the work itself is not unsafe under proper working conditions). Crack down on that, and the people who perpetuate those conditions for the sake of profit...not everybody else.

I expect we will see big differences in all kinds of travel. In the same way we did after 911. And it never went back to normal

i wonder about transit. Crowded buses. Crammed subways, airplanes,

I wonder if we will see more people choosing trains. They are definitely roomier

Which was actually sad. I’m not sure it was the best or even the most necessary change. Again, what needed to change was the way the higher-ups, world leaders affect geopolitics...not changes and crackdowns on everything for everyone else. The US went to war over a false premise after that, which created more ongoing instability in the Middle East. Brown skinned people have been profiled ever since.

I think we can still shape what happens for better or worse, by demanding better. Drugs, vaccines=Better. Surveillance apparatus and constant lockdowns=Worse.way worse.

I'm hoping with just contagious illnesses in general there will be changes. It's awful how bad the general population is with washing hands. I was one where I would go out with a cold, strep, etc. for a long time due to the attitudes I grew up with, didn't have a choice as a kid and then as an adult it took a while before I changed my ways. I was at least considerate when out when sick like that though in terms of washing hands, communal food, etc. I've seen many instances where others are really rude about that type of thing.
Many senior residents do have flu outbreak protocols, but those types of things can be improved too. Healthcare settings often do very little for those of us with greater risks and chronic illnesses, would love to see some more protection.
