The relatively low numbers in BC now reflect the success of the measures to contain the spread.

Covid summary

"Of the COVID-19 cases reported in Canada to date, approximately half (50%) are male. Approximately one third (31%) of cases are 60 years old and over (Figure 3)."

They’re the same measures everywhere though. And here seniors are out and about walking and shopping in grocery stores as much as anyone. And the only two deaths were people 80-90.

How do you know who's out and about? I haven't been out of the park for a week. I wouldn't have any idea what's happening out there. When I was out most people were reasonable, except in London Drugs which was busier than it needed to be. I got out of there quickly.

Other than a walk through my own area, when I saw various ages doing the same, I haven't been out since the weekend. Mrs. M is shopping today (with multiple precautions taken, she's a bit of germophobe at the best of times) but we are trying to keep that down to one trip a week. Of course, working from home kind of keeps me in from breakfast to dinner at any rate.

I get out for a ride around the neighbourhood everyday - I am working remotely from my parent’s spare room downstairs, my old room (up the street) because it couldn’t be set up for a quiet schedule with privacy, or work required Ethernet, here - they would be angry if I lost that opportunity because it also bodes well for people with disabilities in the future - we don’t have close contact, they are upstairs at the other end and I wipe everything I touch but we have conversations from 10 ft away, top/ bottom of stairs, or I call on my phone. ...and I shop about 2x week. I go to the same store...always seniors there. My 80 yr old step dad shops for groceries everyday. He can’t not do it or he’d get extremely depressed.

I don’t really have much choice. I have to take some risk or i’d be locked in my little bedroom with no way to cook, no bathroom. Remember, I live with a stranger. We are mostly in our rooms. I don’t know exactly where she goes or what she touches and I can’t control her choices. I’m doing my best. Better than some others I know.

I figure Tim Hortons kiosks are still open and people can still go get a coffee...they will as long as they can. Also the big grocery stores, big drug stores, Canadian Tire...have more than necessities. Drive thrus are open...all those people are working, like my roommate, and can’t isolate very much, so the snobbery around it is unfair.

It isn’t snobbery. It is following guidelines to try to prevent as many deaths as possible

i see you are back to thinking it’s over kill and not such a big deal with a few deaths. What you will never ‘ow, and none of us really will, is what would have happened if we just let it ride out. Hospital beds in Stanley park like there are in Central Park?

you should mostly stay inside. We are all asked to. Ca you go out for air daily? I guess so. Certainly people with dogs have to go out so it appears some allowances are made. Unlike in some countries where you have to have a specific note to leave your home

it you absolutely should not be going to a store more than once a week. Once every two weeks would be better. You put yourself at risk or others if you unknowingly have a mild case of Covid 19 and spread it around

if you are unable to purchase two weeks or a weeks supplies and get it home then start ordering on line

My 85 - sorry she was 88 - year old grandmother was not treated for cancer - they wouldn't treat her - and she died. My grandfather on the other side died of pneumonia and copd at 64.
So - the making of these decisions rarely (if ever!) depends on age alone. It is a complex matrix of understanding the FULL situation of a person's health & their personal wishes, and weighing the risks & benefits & alternatives of any treatment - just as it always is. To say it is only about age is misleading. We will all die at some point - some of us get to know what the likely trajectory of that may be, for others it is a surprise.

To your point Kimmio - 20 years ago my mother was 73, in generally okay health. She had surgery & then chemo for colon cancer. At first they did not offer chemo, but she asked about it, feeling anxious about possible remnants. Her system did not tolerate the first chemo drugs, so she was switched to a newer drug. She just finished her prescribed course of chemo uneventfully & felt pretty good - then 2 days later she suddenly went into multi-system collapse and died after 2 weeks in the ICU. It was due to an adverse effect of the drug. People die - treated or not treated. No guarantees. No age discrimination.

The numbers about 'projections' and presence of COVID in community can be VERY misleading. The modelling use is just that - modelling & estimates - based on best data available at the moment - which is not very consistent/reliable - and therefore the modelling projections are most likely inaccurate. Epidemiologists make a lifetime's work of studying such matters at highly advanced levels - we can't just look up numbers or charts on the internet & think our own conclusions are correct.

Thanks for clarifying @Kimmio Laughterlove. I was asking out of curiousity, not judgement. I agree, you have good reason to go out.

I partly understand the snobbery statement you make in context of your city. It does snobbery well.

I am thankful to have the option to choose to mostly isolate safely. I know not everyone can make that decision, or that if they do, their lives are changed more profoundly.

Guidelines are different by province and city. Don't be an a-hole. Nobody here is being that strict. I am on Vancouver Island not the mainland where Vancouver is - 795,000 people, 72 cases, 2 deaths of very elderly. This needs perspective. Maybe people are losing perspective couped up.

I do mostly stay in. People are allowed to get out for air and exercise. Kids are out with parents riding bikes up and down the street or siblings from same house running around in park/ school fields.

The other day I saw teens shooting hoops in a schoolyard. There were 4 hoops, everyone had their own ball and was maintaining social distance. People have to get out. More will die for other reasons if they don't.

Now under the Golden Rule ... is Christian snobbery vs god's humility possible, or is this a god conflict as the person demands worship? A god conflict would be an infinite battle ... thus stars expand and collapse to darker god-night things! This may be on the wrong string of beads than the god-Dei ... goodies!

I see. I am an a hole because I said you should be following the rules. Do you think everyone saying this is also a a hole. Your dr Henry, Trudeau, .........

if people are out and about they are going to ultimately cause the virus to spread. One person is all it takes to push the virus along.
I live in a small town. So far the hospital lists two cases, one a guy from Toronto who was sent back home. But our town is following all the rules like everyone else

we won’t know what could have happened if we had done nothing. It I do certainly believe the modeling that shows we need to keep the number of ill people who need hospital care down or we will overwhelm the hospital system

i would assume, as you say you are working in one place and sleeping in another, that you are getting out daily twice to make that trip.
