Novel Coronavirus

I sometimes have to use public transport. I'm guessing when this virus gets really bad here in Oz , public transport will no longer be available. Already, bus drivers are wearing masks and passengers are doing what they can to maintain some distance.

I have a question for ChemGal and other medical type folks. I only have one face mask. I understand its main advantage is to stop me touching my face. Is it okay to wear this whenever I'm on public transport -or can I only use it the once?

I can understand the worries that something bigger is going on. I might entertain those thoughts if my immune system was fine or if I hadn't just finished the year I did. Hearing that Alberta schools have been closed indefinitely is a "this s**t is real" moment. It might be the most realistic response considering the circumstances. "Indefinitely" might be only a few weeks or this is it for the school year. The executive for the choir I'm in is discussing options. They reached out to get choir members' feedback. I suspect it may be done for the year. Sadly.

On a more positive note, I got some reorganizing done at home today.

I guess if your hands are freshly washed and you are in a clean room at home that nobody else goes into...you can touch your face as much as you want! Live large!

Otherwise, yeah, it's a good idea to keep your hands away from
your face. I still inadvertently do it. I'm noticing it more now. I'm also washing frequently and using purell wipes and dispensers everytime I pass one in public (they are in all the malls and big grocery stores), plus I still have some of my own left - about 1/3 of a travel size bottle - and my alcohol spray. My hands were clean before, now they're obsessively clean and feeling dry even with lotion.

What about clothing? Can it stay on clothing very long or does everything need washing everytime you are in a public place where there are other people, even for an hour? Should I be washing my jackets everyday?...because I can't realistically do that.

I've also been bathing in the morning and at night - partly because it's cold coming home at night and I'm freezing and then my muscles spasm...but I also feel the need to be extra clean. I don't want to be doing laundry every single day. The water bill will be enormous and it's probably a waste. Water use is something that needs to be considered, too. What about dish drying towels? My roommate and I share dish towels. They get washed regularly but not changed or washed every single day. I only have a few.

I really haven't had to use masks much at all, so there may be better info online.
My thoughts are being careful about your hands, if they are clean and where you touch it putting it on and off. You don't want to be touching railings, handholds, seats, etc. and then transferring viruses or germs to the mask that you will then have up against your mouth and nose.
The other concern with reusing is your own bacteria, it's on your face, you're breathing into it. A few times is one thing, but if you're doing this for a while that can cause infections. I know even with winter scarfs I don't go too long without washing them. You could also try a fashion scarf, something lightweight because of your climate, and see if that has the same affect for you and then you're able to wash it.

When it comes to being at home, I am pretty much assuming if Chemguy gets it so will I. Not that I won't take precautions if he is sick, but I'm not distancing myself from him while he appears well. Dish towels, if hands are clean when drying dishes they should be fine.
I don't focus on clothing much in terms of illnesses. I do think about it a little bit more if I was at the hospital, especially in the inpatient building. My jacket comes off before I wash my hands. Considering the few numbers of colds and flus I do get, I think it's pretty sufficient - typically I get one because Chemguy picks something up at work.

I'm a bit confused by your reaction to this, you've been saying it's overblown yet you seem to be coming up with all kinds of ways this may be transmitted to you. I'm not running around cleaning toilet seats because of this.

Now here's something you don't see every day: Ted Cruz agreeing with and even re-tweeting Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Before you know it they'll be singing "Kumbayah" together.

By the way, AOC seems to be discrediting other stories I've seen from the under 40 crowd complaining that they get this pandemic and it's the "Boomers" who are taking all the unnecessary risks.

I agree with Chemgal about the masks. There is NO need for you to wear a mask unless YOU are sick & preventing spreading droplets to others. Be mindful of touching your face (it's SO hard not to!! - oh great, now I've got an itch LOL). Sanitize frequently - including your phone that is often next to your face or touched by your fingers. Wash your hands well when your return to your home & don't freak out.

Cancelling public transit would be catastrophic for many people. They do not otherwise have transport to work, to grocery & drug stores, to food banks. It discriminates against those without cars. There is no planned closure of transit here, although some routes are downgrading their scheduling - which makes sense - no point running buses, trains, etc that are empty - better for the drivers, environment etc.

Good morning all

back in Canada from Florida. Happy to be home but in two weeks quarantine at our farm. Luckily a niece is able to get groceries and leave them on the porch for us

no line at the border but 60% of cars driving north were from Ontario

at border they asked us if we had left North America in the last month. If we had any symptoms, and even mentioned cough, fever, sore throat specifically,, ask where we were headed and told us to self quarantine.
we asked about border closings and things and she said they get new directions hourly. Sounded stressed

At the moment I am probably one of the best protected people around. I am in full protective gear in a negative pressure room with my son.

Interestingly, yesterday they did not test for COVID because he didn't fit the pattern - no travel, or contact with a confirmed case. Today, now that we know there is community spread in Canada, he has been tested. The policy changed overnight.

My worry has always been that high risk people like Matthew would be the canary in the coal mine. I just hope my son isn't a canary.

I'm confused by my reaction, too. lol. As I keep saying, I'm of two minds...I don't want to get sick with it even if it's fairly mild. Being quarantined for 2 weeks I find terrifying. I can't afford it. I will almost certainly get depressed. I also don't want to be asymptomatic and pass it to my elderly step father. Also I live with a roommate much younger who could be asymptomatic. She's under 30. And I don't know what she's touched before I touched it. Like I said, I've never seen her sanitize any counters, and I've been the one to clean the bathroom since she's moved in. I clean the toilet seat every day or two anyway. She's organized but she doesn't wipe up the sink or counters...and as for the toilet seat, she's not family and she's not here at the same time, so I barely know her or her habits. They seem "ok", (she not a clean freak and neither am I unless I'm looking at somebody else's mess) but I just wish I didn't share a bathroom to be honest, so I could keep my own germs to myself. My landlords insisted on renting the other room and I didn't get much say in the process.

The other part of me says, "why won't they admit this is not much worse than the flu"? Wtf is really going on?

There's even more panic in the US because their health system is a bigger mess and Trump's in charge. Her reaction is understandably different than the younger crowd up here. But yeah...takes a pandemic to get those two to agree...odd.

My roommate is young, busy, and doesn't care about the place, or communicating with me...so my reaction is what it is.

And...to make it even more confusing, my step brother landlord "refuses" to take this seriously in any way. He's not even paying attention to the news. He said he will not be dictated by fear and he will not change anything. We share the laundry room. Down here in my suite - they have to come in to get to it. They just text at random times and come down and do a load (they don't hang around they just throw a load in, go back up, put it in the dryer, go back up, etc.) It's not that often because I think my stepsister inlaw does laundry at her dad's whom she visits frequently.

The Brits seem to have a whole different 'take' on Corona at the moment. Not worrying about infections. A Brit family member returned from her job on a cruise ship yesterday. Her first leg ended with a stop at Orlando - which was very busy. London was quieter but she said there was no monitoring that she saw. When she landed she chose to stay with a friend as the family ave several little ones just recovering from chicken pox. She hugged her friend and has no instructions to take extra precautions.
