There were no face masks and indeed the only mention of corona all afternoon was one fan commenting that ASDA had a promotion on 24 packs of a certain Mexican lager.

The attendance was a stunning 3,274, a record league crowd for South Shields and the second highest in western Europe on Saturday behind the 4,942 at Notts County.

It was swollen by several hundred supporting visitors FC United of Manchester, the club formed in protest at the Glazer take over at Old Trafford, and nomadic football fans desperate for their 'fix' including Sheffield United supporters who'd made a weekend of their visit to Newcastle and Swansea fans who should have been at Middlesbrough.

There was absolutely no chance of 'social distancing' a metre or two apart here. Fans were packed five deep all the way around the pitch, jostling for a clear view of what turned out to be an excellent game.

So what does it look like your City is doing so far to 'protect the homeless or shelter residents from the virus'?
It looks like what the City of Toronto is doing so far to protect homeless shelter residents from the coronavirus is ...
about the same thing it did to protect them from SARS: virtually nothing.

Yep, the Brits don’t get it yet. In my hometown there are 265 cases, 46 of them connected to one night out at a club. Let me guess that there will be a spike in new cases in South Shield and area in the next week.

It's worse than that. The Johnson government is letting things go on, hoping that by letting it spread and peak now, they can build "herd immunity" avoid a second "bump" later (which apparently did happen with the 1918 flu). It's totally nuts in the eyes of the rest of the world and flies in the face of almost every medical expert except maybe the ones advising Johnson. For instance, we have no evidence COVID can actually build herd immunity the way we can with measles or mumps. If it is like flu, herd immunity only lasts until the next strain or mutation (yes, that would be a problem for any vaccine, too).

In short: Localize testing, federalize shutdowns and task the Army Corps of Engineers to expand hospital capacity.

Yeah, and nobody will feel good about saying”told you so” afterwards.

A fifteen year old has set up a neighbours helping neighbours website in Berlin Germany where people can post what they have to offer for people in quarantine , people at risk or people who need to work but don’t have daycare. As of last week, all daycares are closed and schools are closing this week for at least five weeks.
People are offering to walk dogs, go shopping, do repairs or odd jobs, cook meals. This might be something useful in Canada as well. Of course, there is a disclaimer that this is at your own risk.

This could be wrong, but it is a strategy.

I've seen a few options locally.

This is assuming that the stuff coming out of the cup doesn't go back into the bucket. It seems questionable how often people can get sick with this, how many strains there are, etc.
Also, those who are out of the hospital still likely need some care. Some will need oxygen for life after this.

Force of habit - I got bored and went to the supermarket with a Tim's. There was about the usual number of customers in the store (the seating area was almost empty though. It's near the door so there's a lot of fresh air coming in, and it was cleaner than usual - seemed like a good time to be there).

There was a sign saying something like, "Do to the public health situation we are suspending our in store 'roll up the rim' campaign until further notice. We cannot accept online promotions at this location. We are also not accepting personal reusable cups at this time."

People were buying more non-perishables and paper products though. It's not just TP now. It was weird. All the regular, cheaper, bread was sold out. Only the really expensive gourmet breads were available, and regular dinner buns seemed overpriced. I decided to buy rice cakes because I just wanted something to put peanut butter on. The aisles in the whole store looked more bare than usual.

This "thing" is all people were talking about. And nearly everyone who's talking about it thinks it's either being overblown - or there's something suspicious going on higher up the chain. So do I. I understand elderly and immune compromised people are at risk. They are at risk for pneumonia with any cold and flu, and other bugs, too. This really feels like something weird is going on though. If it was something that was killing everyone who came into contact with it within days, like in the movies - or something way more gruesome, I could see that all of this extra commotion might make sense - but it really doesn't make sense to me.

Oh, I said something like, "Just doing some apocalypse shopping" to a young couple in line, who offered to help me unload my scooter basket (I bought lots of oranges and bananas, a few boxes of fruit n' veggie juice - in case I have to live on noodle soup, pasta, beans and rice...and I bought coffee, and more vinegar because I've almost used what I had, up - and I bought ingredients for a great spaghetti sauce and I made enough for a few meals)...

So the male half of the couple asks me if I want to hear a joke. He actually also asked, "Are you ok with jokes?" To which, I answered, "Sure!" ...

What goes well with coronavirus?

Lyme disease! :barefoot::giggle:
