Netherlands has shut down all airtravel from England and Germany is thinking about it because of the new Corona mutation that is supposedly 70 times more contagious than the first version. Thats scary. The first version was already more contagious than the flu.
Is anybody thinking that the UK was the first to start the vaccines and now they have a mutation that is 70 times more contagious? Are these cases around those who got the vaccine? Just wondering....

Not likely from what I am hearing. There's a good piece in the NYT about the whole mutation thing, assuming you haven't used your however many free articles yet. And, by the way, the scientists in the article say the "70 times" is coming from modelling and officials, not scientists doing lab work. They really don't know the full impact of the mutation yet and are very clear that human behaviour is still the biggest driver of the spread of COVID. Their bottom line is that this is something for scientists to study, not for us panic about.

I'm curious how much mutations of what's going around in general affect contagiousness. How an individual is affected will make a difference, so variance is expected to be seen even with no changes whatsoever, but it does seem like there's a huge variance, quite a few super spreader events where some care was being taken and people who didn't seem to be symptomatic at the time and then people living together where only 1 in the household gets sick, without isolating immediately because they just didn't know. The coworker my husband was exposed to for example, his wife and kids were never infected as much as could be told (I don't think they were tested multiple times though). I was surprised his wife never got sick.

The chatter on Ontario media is that the Ford government may trigger a 28-day circuit breaker (14 days in the North, which isn't as hard hit as the South). The premier did say on Friday they would be meeting with health officials on the weekend and making an announcement tomorrow. I am a bit skeptical. The lockdowns in the GTA don't seem to have had much impact so unless this is going to have tighter restrictions and more teeth than those, not sure how it will go.

Health Unit here is super-cracking down on # of people in stores again, apparently. One of the "Peters" (we have three long time full time guys named Peter, not one of whom will answer to Pete), was stuck on the door when I popped in for dog food.

As of Christmas Eve there will be a province wide lockdown, but it is unclear if that includes all of the restrictions that are within the grey level, which would include no indoor gatherings with anyone outside of your family for Christmas.

So what does this mean? No one can visit their family for Christmas unless they live in the same house?
I find the start date of Christmas Eve odd for that reason. Most jurisdictions are now starting before Christmas and taking a break on Christmas Day. This implies Christmas Eve is the break.

I hope this will not make my Christmas Day plans illegal. I was planning to take most of a Christmas dinner to my sister's to finish/share. I live alone; she lives 45 minutes north, in what is likely to be a less restrictive zone. She has a person who she lives with who will be a week or so away by the time we meet for dinner.

I think Ford will hopefully clear up things tomorrow when he speaks to us, so we will know exactly what he means.

My relatives in the UK are getting quite stressed by the mutation information. All but one of them are in the London/southeast area. The other one is in Coventry, so more Midland area. Strangely it is only one of his kids who have been infected (and recovered).

I haven't shared my thoughts with them but..................I think there is a big problem coming up quite soon with food. Deliveries from other countries are being banned at the entry points. Much of the diet of the average family comes from elsewhere around the world and most people don't have a big supply of anything at home.

My sister is having Christmas on the 24th now......

If this does become a true lockdown, Ford should stop those who are not essential workers from commuting to jobs that are in other cities than the cities, towns in which they live.

Non-essential businesses are supposed to close or work from home in a grey zone, IIRC, so it would be moot if the whole province goes grey.

I too hope you will be able to visit your sister. All along it seems to have been said that if living alone, one could visit another household for Xmas.

Our son is going for testing first thing tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, there has been some COVID at his hospital construction worksite - nobody that he knowingly has worked in proximity to - but they do move around onsite. He's extremely conscientious about protocols himself. Fingers crossed he will be okay. We still hope they will join us for some time at Xmas.

That's concerning, hopefully eases up soon. Other countries likely have similar mutations/the same mutation already circulating. I doubt it's being monitored worldwide well.
When I was thinking worst case scenario in March/April I was thinking of lots of food shortages etc. if work involved within the food production/supply chain had to shut down, not just here but other places. Worries about meds (still actually a bit of a concern longer term, but less so when there was so much uncertainty. When the grocery store shelves were bare gun sales were also taking off. As far as what could have been with a pandemic though, this isn't 'that bad'. I was thinking at least SARS level of severity with this level of transmission.
