Interesting thoughts by Randall Munroe on how the pandemic might affect our perception of media timelines.

I am working on a story right now set in "the present" and trying to figure out how the pandemic should be affecting the characters' lives without making it the story.

I just learned our local hospital has an outbreak affecting several staff members. They are isolating so hopefully it will be nipped in the bud

Marketplace CBC tested 20 masks to see which masks are more efficient against COVID 19, the following article will tell you how well the mask you're wearing does.

N95's of course are the most efficient but surprisingly the blue 3 layer medical masks are almost as efficient.....the most ineffective are the "gator" masks.
Scroll down to see how the other masks did.

This excellent article informs me that the three layer cotton masks I've just finished making for some of my younger generation aren't 'the best'. Too bad I didn't know last week! Oh well - I only wasted some time and fabric.

I'm glad to see the two layer cotton masks did well. I've just made a mask with a filter lining that I bought from a quilt store. I don't know what the filter fabric is. It looks like a thin batting and probably has plastic or something in it. It is no woven. I think this mask will be more comfortable because it sits away from my nose.

This is the pattern I used: Mask Pattern

Despite it being Friday the 13th 2020, my daughter is returning home today. She was in Miami planning to work on a cruise ship. Apparently the CDC have changed their rules so often that the cruise line are sending all their staff home while they wait for the rules to be doable. She will travel to Calgary and hopes to be included in that airports experimental Covid control measure. She has completed full quarantine four times already and really doesn't want to do it again!

That is almost the same as the pattern I used. The slight difference wouldn't really make any difference. You can buy stick on lightweight metal bars to use instead of a wire. They really help with glasses.

I have jewelry wire for the nose. There's a spot to put the wire so it can removed for washing.

That looks very like my fav, the one that Cat made me. I've also got one in a similar pattern, but a bit bigger, and with a nose wire, which fits OVER the simple silicone mask bracket I bought. A mask bracket is nice if you need to wear a mask for hours, because you're not sucking fabric into your mouth, so your speech is a bit clearer, but you need the nose wire and a slightly larger size, to accommodate it.

I now have a couple of different ear savers, which are good for some masks. I don't mind the tied ones, but they're harder to get off and on.

Good points.....too many egos and once again politics controls the Covid response...grrrr.
Interesting follow up to our conversation about a more robust Federal effort to control COVID. Apparently, there is an emergencies clause in the constitution that could be used to create and force national standards. Using it would likely trigger a major constitutional row, though, which is probably Trudeau is avoiding it. Ford, for one, has made it clear it won't fly with his government.

Just getting the whole nation on board with a universal code would be nice, so we all understand what each code actually means....(the one we have in Ontario is confusing). As it stands now, you could leave one city and technically have to enter another city for work and not realize what restrictions you may be operating under as you enter a different town or city.....
Even highways, such as the 401 etc... could put this on their signs.
I would also appreciate every town, city and village to post the code we're actually operating under. As it stands now I have to check the internet but it would be nice to see the code posted outside city halls and shopping malls on outdoor mall signs somehow. Or even a mail out from the health dept or gov't reps.
Also a mail out to tell everyone which masks are best to be wearing.
And I also think it would help if they talked more about this virus being airborne to explain the urgency to obey codes that have been raised to code orange and red.
I also think they should lose the word "lockdown" and change "orange" to mean cautionary measures and red to mean extreme cautionary measures, or something like that......the word lockdown seems to be suggesting jail like conditions rather than something we all participate in through education.
Anyway, just some random thoughts to ease my frustration.

I don't really see an advantage with codes.

I had to pop out to the supermarket, and even though I now have about 7-8 reusable masks, I had taken off the one I was wearing today when I went out and came back earlier, and left it on my dresser. I don't usually wear it while I'm riding in the fresh air on my scooter, unless the wind is cold - sometimes I'll pull it up from around my chin because it warms my face!

Got to the store, and realized it wasn't in my jacket pocket - left it at home. Didn't have a spare one in my backpack (over my chair). Long story short, if that happens to you, ask at customer service and they will likely have disposable ones to give out. That's what I have had to do twice now.

I just popped a spare mask into my backpack while I was thinking of it.

Anyway, I'm going to take a much needed break from thinking about stressful things, including covid policies (I'm not going anywhere but to the grocery store and to run in and buy the odd cup of coffee - but I can also skip buying the coffee and drink it at home). Might do a Schitt's creek binge. I've been hearing good things about it so I think I'll give it another chance. Maybe I'll come back to discuss scary realities once I've made it through all 6 seasons.
