Berlin, Germany has forbidden a demonstration of far-right organizations planned for Saturday against the Corona measurements. That comes after they had to dissolve the last demonstration because nobody was wearing masks or kept distance. The organizers and speakers are all from the right/ Neo Nazi scene as well as the conspiracy scene.
Of course, now they are up in arms about the “ right of free speech”. The argument is that demonstrations can be canceled if they pose a risk to the wellbeing of the public.
Not surprisingly, all democratic parties of the right and left have applauded the decision, except for the extreme right party AfD.

But surely, you reply, it's about the freedom to choose not to wear a mask?

Not about masks, not about authoritarian regimes - this thread is about Ritafee.

If you choose to scroll backwards you will see that Ritafree sets the agenda. She gives some deliberately selected anecdotal evidence to back her claims -and like ducks to water, you splash about in her pond, trying to install rational debate.. Waddle out of her pool, splash yourselves off, and leave her be.

There are times when the police use unnecessary violence -this is both wrong - but also understandable. If someone was thrusting a sign in my face and screaming abuse I might just lose my temper and use violence. It would be both wrong behaviour, but in common with being a human under stress and strain.

To understand the multi-faceted nuances requires both a sense of fairness and cognitive dissonance. it is okay to actually have conflicting views about how one views the police force, governments, the health service, etc, etc.... But to do so, requires the ability to see ourselves and our nearest and dearest, as neither black or white, but shades of grey.

In case anyone is interested, the rest of Oz is pleased to see that these draconian, authoritarian, methods are showing pleasing results finally.

I thought I‘d drop by and see how discussion was going. Arguing about masks, just like everywhere else. I am tired of people arguing about masks.

Shades of 1918. A book I read on 1918 pandemic said people were arguing furiously about it back then too.

I mostly stay in, making it largely moot for me.

There are 75 cases from a church in the city. Some numbers I've seen given are ~150 members and 100 people in attendance (one day - not sure number of days people were in attendance, more than 1 while the cases were growing). It's being said that guidelines were followed and it was mentioned there was an upstairs and downstairs which would have helped split people up.
So anywhere from 50%-75% of a good-sized group has been infected. School starts sometime next week.

Some places are staying online. A friend in California said her son’s school (private) is staying online with fancy software sort of like Zoom, where can see each other, but fancier.

It shows that heart disease is the main cause of death here in Oz.

Most of the deaths from covid in Oz have been very elderly folks in nursing homes. Our care of the elderly needs far more training and higher wages. I'd be the first to admit - with some notable exceptions - that it's a national disgrace. It's noticeable however that far more deaths are occurring in nursing homes that are privately run - where profit making is the main incentive. Public nursing homes have better outcomes re covid deaths.

Mental health support is also seriously underfunded -particularly very serious mental health conditions -such as schizophrenia.

When Covid first became a “thing” the New York Times published a list of some early deaths, a human interest story. There was only one young person, who had other serious medical problems. I was surprised to see how many were their late 80s or 90s. One man was 108.

Online is an option here. I think it's the public board and not the overall school system in the city has a 30% online enrolment. The problem is, many parents work, not all kids learn well online, not everyone has internet & devices to support all their kids doing online school, etc.
Class sizes are not smaller due to online enrolment either, it means less kids in the school, but not all of the classrooms will be move. The plan is to have the same number of classes regardless of them being online or in school. So if there are 100 kids, plans for 25 to be in a class normally for 4 classes, but 25 are enrolled online, there will be 3 classes in school of 25 and 1 class online. Obviously many times the numbers aren't so neat though. They are not trying to make the online classes larger than the in school classes.

Here’s something of interest. A former member of our church (now living in California, the same one with the son in private school), is originally from Belarus. You may have seen a story about massive protests over their dictator leader (known as the “last dictator in Europe). I asked her if people were not worried about Covid with such crowds. The crowd (peaceful) was very large.

She said the leader refused to believe that it was serious and apparently there was no official attempts to mitigate the spread. It went through the entire country (it’s not very big). She said her 75-year old aunt had a bad case but survived.

The people at the protest looked young.

I should try to fact check it. She’s relying on information from her relatives. She thinks Putin will him stay in power.

Yes, it’s very confusing reading about how every place is planning for the year.

K-12 school seems to start earlier in the States, in August, so there are some stories already out. One high school found a student who had symptoms on the first day and tested positive for Covid later. Their plans were suddenly in disarray. The article ended there.

Are there any fundamentalist Christians here who think taking a vaccine (even one that has been tested a lot, maybe something next year at the earliest) is like the Mark of the Beast? I think it‘s something in the Book of Revelations.

Orthodox and Roman Catholic (who were still one church then) found that in the early years of the church, Revelations caused all kinds of problems and destabilized everything. So they started not reading verses from it. This practise remains to this day.

They also cooperate with civil authorities of wherever they live. For a long time Christians were viewed with great suspicion. They tried to show that they were good citizens even if they refused pagan practices.
