Novel Coronavirus

I hate to say it...but this is what Donald Trump was trying to say when it was interpreted as him telling people to drink Lysol or inject bleach or whatever. I don’t like him, but this stood out - to be fair, maybe he wasn’t actually telling people to ingest household disinfectant.

“SaNOtize's nasal spray is designed designed to “disinfect” your upper airway using nitric oxide. Initial tests of the company's product suggest that the spray inactivated more than 99.9 per cent of SARs-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, within two minutes during laboratory tests.”

“You’re using a hand sanitizer to disinfect your hands. It’s a similar idea, but instead of a hand sanitizer, it’s a nasal spray to disinfect your upper airway,” SaNOtize CEO Gilly Regev told CTV Vancouver.

This is what Trump said. "I see the disinfectant that knocks it out in a minute, one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning? As you see, it gets in the lungs, it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that."

Maybe someone briefed him on this research or he heard something about it, and it just sounded dumb as it came out of his mouth. But it’s along the same lines, I must admit. There’s a lot I won’t defend him on, but maybe the media ‘were’ too hard on him on this one...and due diligence might’ve turned up this research a few weeks ago.

As for the research and the findings so far...this does look pretty cool. Effective and cheap.

Earlier trials for it were done in Utah...maybe he did know something about it, and didn’t mean to suggest bleach.

Even if this is what he was referring the problem is still that he should be keeping his mouth on medical issues because he really doesn't have a clue what he's talking about and his sometimes incoherent words can lead to all sorts of tragic results. No one ever had any doubts that he had "heard" something. That's the problem. He "hears" things and then spouts off about them without knowing anything about them and he has this fanatical cult-like following that's then left to interpret for themselves what he meant and sometimes do stupid things.

You’re right. It’s too bad Fauci or whoever was there couldn’t have clarified then, or shortly after, that he was talking about a new kind of treatment being tested, not household disinfectant.

I don’t think that was what trump was saying at all. He was musing out loud, a dangerous activity for anyone let alone a stupid person. And got interested in the idea of bright lights and disinfectant

this idea being proposed is not that. This is more akin to people using nasal sprays because of allergies. Shrinking the nasal membranes. It is an interesting idea to combat this virus, and simple for sure. That doesn’t mean it effectively would kill the virus in a minute or two , which was what caught trumps attention related to bleach and sunlight

Musing out loud is fine if you make yourself clear. It’s not fine when you’re POTUS and people look to you for leadership.

Except the CEO of the company that makes it did use the word “disinfect”. He used it to describe the process of what SaNOtize does, specifically - that it disinfects the airway. He was not referring to any other product or process except what this drug being tested does. Trump did not clarify.

So that experiment didn’t work. And the economy is still going to take a hit. SeemEd like an odd strategy when other countries like imposd rules and travel quarantines and have come out better

So the guy behind Sweden's Covid-19 strategy has more or less admitted that he blew it. Basically, he now thinks Sweden should have tightened up more, though not as much as other European countries.

China was almost like a gift to the world that we could watch and learn from and this guy probably never even imagined yet how wierd this virus was going to be...foolish. By the same token we also watched Sweden but waited because it was unproven.

I had an interesting conversation with my brother today regarding the different hotspots in Europe. None of this is proven AFAIK. But he pointed out that the region in Italy that was hardest hit had gotten rid off the family doctor system in the years before, so everyone sick had to go to the hospital, and by the time they figured out what was going on, chances were the staff was already spreading it themselves.
Additionally, Italians and Spaniens are much more physical and social than for example Germans, being much closer to each other, which increases the spread. Same with the French- they often kiss each other on both cheeks as a greeting. While Germans don’t even shake hands anymore and are not really of the hugging kind. Of course, the timing of the restrictions also had been a factor, as you can see in Sweden, who are also not so much huggers, but didn’t have to social distance at all for a long time.
Belgium is a bit of a surprise- but Belgium is very central in travel, so that could have brought the virus in and spread rapidly. Of course, all theories, no proof.

I wouldn't say it was a gift because a lot of people died in that part of the world.

The Top Doctor Who Aced the Coronavirus Test

wow. NYT article about BC Health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry.

I saw/ heard her speak last year - about a year ago - at an information panel session about the opioid and homeless crises - hosted by a United Church. There were a few people on the panel with worthwhile things to say besides her so she didn't leave a huge impression on me then - but she seemed sensible.

I feel like Alberta is jumping to phase 2.5 this Friday. Some of the things that were part of phase 3 are being included.
Not thrilled, the active cases in this city have doubled in this past week. I think we're going to see more vulnerable people being hit due to it, but the hospitals are doing ok. I do expect to see more healthcare based outbreaks.

I read the article just the other day. I had sort of calmed down when all protests started in the US. Just dreadful, the man who was killed, and there have been more deaths since.

But the appearance of these crowds, with everyone acting as though the disease had simply ceased to exist, that’s a shock too. Most of protesters are young, but I’ve no doubt some will pass it on to older relatives.

One of the people I follow on Youtube is a bat biologist and he arranged a Zoom meeting with another man in Russia, who wrote an article some time ago, about the origin of the virus.

They both suspect an accidental release from the lab in Wuhan. The virus jumped from bats, who do not live anywhere near Wuhan and would have been hibernating over the winter.

Samples were collected in 2013 after several miners in an area where the bats do live were infected. Two died. Apparently this is not all that uncommon, but had never spread beyond the handful of affected people. This was was over 1000 km away from Wuhan.

In due time, the samples were brought to Wuhan. I am not qualified to assess the information but some readers may find it interesting,
