Novel Coronavirus

Anybody listened to the “Stronger together” concert? It made me wonder if there was any other country which did something similar? I am always impressed by Canadians.

We heard a day or so ago that camping was opening up (in a limited fashion) for summer. Bookings to start in May for a June opening. Today I learned that the highway we use to get to the Provincial Park is closed, except for 'essential' traffic. Not sure how that will play out. The highway leads to camping/fishing areas and various Reserves. The Park plan to restrict camping to alternate sites.

They are talking about reopening provincial parks in BC in the next few weeks. I do believe this can be done safely. I hope people are responsible and behave if the parks do open. So far it seems people are good in parks that are open. It's so nice to have the option to walk outdoors safely. I'd hate to see that ruined by bozos.

Quebec is making some very bad decisions right now IMO, they are already having massive issues with their long term care homes, watch their hospitalizations spike up in a month and deaths in about 2.

I agree, I think Ontario should slow down too! I think keeping the schools closed is good.
Hopefully this new condition showing up in England remains rare:

Huh? We aren't opening anything yet. The only announcement made is that school will remain closed until May 31 and that could be extended further. So I'm not sure what you want them to slow down.

I worry that Trump is peeving off the Chinese and causing them to shut down with their information. They would be the ones I would want to know more about what's happening after they've reopened more of their businesses.

Also @ChemGal, is it possible for the virus to just be staying dormant within people that are asymptomatic or had a mild case, only to erupt later? Rather than building an immunity?

Yeah, probably should have said that I think they should be preparing people for a longer lock down period...eg 4 to 6 months.

If you look at roadmap released, it is predicated on there still being some restrictions in place even after phase 3. And right now, we don't even know when we will even achieve the conditions to trigger phase 1. So I'm betting 4 months may not be far off, actually.

It's possible, but seems unlikely especially with what we typically see with respiratory illnesses. Unless something else happens, like an infection with something else. Come flu season we may see people who were mildly sick with COVID-19 get the flu a well and then end up quite ill with both.

I think the issue for both Ontario and Quebec is that most illness is related to long term care. It’s tragic and horrendous. But the rest of us are pretty good. So do we open?

ordred a resupply of a dog vitamin I get in California. Don’t ask. it she was at work. Rules changed. More space. Masks. But working

I don't understand how we can make any decisions until we have wider testing, I really don't.

Not everyone needs to be tested. Random sampling (statistically significant) is what needs to happen IMO.

In BC, the majority of the severe cases are in care homes on the lower mainland. There were large outbreaks at 2 poultry processing plants on the lower mainland, also.

The BC Health Officer says though we've seen new cases, hospitalizations are down and we have one of the lowest fatality rates in the world. Most people have recovered or are still recovering, at home.

This is speculation, but I've talked to others in the area who think they had it in Jan-Feb. Maybe BC already had some degree of immunity - and down the west coast. I read California is looking into it there.

I'm concerned because this isn't typical, but I appreciate your opinion as usual.

I would really have to read more to be properly informed, but in general my understanding is we see latent viruses that reactivate that are certain types of viruses. For example, we see this with herpes viruses - the types that cause cold sores and chickenpox/shingles.
I've not heard of coronaviruses doing that before. I've not heard of respiratory viruses doing that. In terms of similar symptoms the closest that comes to mind is mono/Epstein-Barr and I'm not even totally sure if that's one that becomes truly latent, I would have to read more about it.

Is it just a rumour that this coronavirus also has Ebola and HIV - like properties?

I haven't heard any rumours going around. Can you be more specific?
They are all viruses that infect humans, so there will be some similarities.
I mean some of the symptoms, severity, latency of symptoms in people, those who've had it or have recurring symptoms, still communicable ie. virus not going away in everybody...? And that the virus itself has a combo of properties - is not a typical coronavirus.
