Well, we don't need survival of the fittest anymore, imo. Not humans. It hasn't turned out well for us... We advance at our own peril ... think we need survival of the fairest and kindest.

I wonder what happens if science gets a handle on parthenogenesis? (Threads cross paths)

Thing is, if kindness and fairness are characteristics that improve survivability and allow a species to continue and reproduce, then that makes kind, fair people the "fittest". "Fittest" doesn't mean strongest or more powerful, in spite of how some read it, it means best adapted to their environment. The difference with us humans is that our main adaptation to the environment is the ability to actually change the environment (or in some cases ourselves). So, when we moved out of the nice warm climate of Africa into chillier Europe and Asia, we invented clothing and houses.

and we humans have a trait that animals don't have in that animals are specialized to their environment -- fish are specialized to living in aquatic environments, birds are specialized to living in the air, etc -- while humans are generalists -- so we can live in a wider # of different environments--and given our ability to change and build environments...brings the biblical theme of 'all of this is yours. be fruitful & multiply and be stewards' into sharp focus -- we were born to fiddle and intervene and co-create environments :3

and when humanity spreads out through the solar system and beyond, we'll adapt to those environments as well, thus growing our species' survival as a whole :3 (we aren't currently well adapted to various environments such as 'asteroid impact' or 'gamma ray burst' or 'false vacua collapse')

I agree. I was thinking in terms of the idea that the fittest/ strongest, seems to be thought of as the most aggressive/ competitive. So part of changing society to allow that to happen is changing the social environment...and that would include things that either consciously or subconsciously pervade our environment, and influence our thinking, like advertising. It's aggressive an aggressive and competitive behaviour in and of itself, in "a new wilderness" we inhabit. Aggressive and competitive to make $. And they who have the most money gain the most power. At least Madonna Badger has self reflected and is doing something good and redeeming for humanity with it. I applaud her.

Which is why Hawking seriously believes we've already passed the tipping point of keeping Earth a survivable place, and humanity's only chance is to colonize the Universe. It's going to be an interesting ride for humanity.

When will we ever learn? After we get used to questioning and probing what is done to us unknowingly ... via the Peter Prin.?

Perhaps just a phase of something greater?

I actually tend to ignore his doomsday predictions. He is a brilliant astrophysicist but there are more credible sources for the future of the earth and humanity. Just like you wouldn't ask a brilliant plumber to rewire your house.
 
You're right - 'tis his 'opinion', and he's not educated in biology or biodiversity or geology, etc.. However, his opinions are interesting, if only because they're smart.

I don't think that will ever happen Bette. I believe that before it can, Jesus will return to establish God's Kingdom in its fullness.

Which has, unfortunately, been used as an excuse by some Christians to stick their heads in the sand where environmental and other issues are concerned. Not saying you hold that attitude, but what you say above is what they use to justify it.
