New Year's 2020-21 - The good, the bad, the really, really ugly

They're my upstairs landlords, and they're family. I work at my parents place and that makes all three of us vulnerable. My step-dad talked to him about how this is really something to be concerned about, his daughter in her 20s, same. But he just says I respect your opinion but I don't feel the same way.

They don't care about people dropping by and they don't care about taking extra precautions - only when they have to in public. It's like they went along sort of but not really now they've gotten even worse, just as cases are also getting worse. Their opinion on it hasn't changed since the beginning.

Is it March yet? (I think that's when everyone can get a vaccine.)
Sadly I think March will likely still be phase 2 not everyone. I hope you can work something out with them where you feel safe.

Not really here it's moreso people all on the same page. My sister and parents sometimes roll their eyes a bit but they don't push it. We zoomed with a group that had 3 households together. I was expecting 2 households I think one of them lives alone (has had roommates where she lives before) although even if not I figured she would be with her parents. There was a surprise though a new significant other who lives with parents - i felt like he should have stayed home. I know my parents neighbours have had family over too.

This article sounds so strange! Eerie. After every listing it's "This is what happened in the past at this venue... Last year people had a lot of fun at this event.... Normally the celebrations would involve___." Etc. Like time has frozen.

Almost everyone I know is conscientious except the aforementioned couple and one other person I know. It's frustrating.

I turned on the CBC for the evening and tuned in until just after twelve, when I dropped out.

Nova Scotia had an online kitchen party with known musicians as a fundraiser for the food ank , I quite enjoyed that. Good also to hear the news from Berlin, Germany. Because selling of fireworks was not allowed and neither was setting it off on public places, gatherings only allowed for two households with no more than 5 people, it was the first time ever police and fire department had a relatively quiet night and only 10 people ended up in hospital in all of Germany, with fireworks related injuries only two of them so serious that parts of their hand/ arm had to be amputated. Considering how crazy people are about fireworks on New Years these statistics are usually way worse, that is a good thing. One 24 year old died, because he had built his own fireworks.

We managed to keep one of our traditions, watching the New Year's concert from the Vienna Philharmonic. They apparently did daily testing for a period in the lead up so the orchestra could be on stage without any shields or masks. No audience though, save an online one that they unmuted for a couple ovations. It was the usual program, heavy on the Strauss family and their contemporaries and ending with the traditional encores: Johann Strauss Jr.'s Blue Danube Waltz and his father's Radetzky March.

Oh, and since one of our regulars is already there (hi, @PilgrimsProgress )...
Thanks, Mendalla - I'm ALWAYS ahead of you Canucks!

The good was rather slim pickings this year - but here goes -

I gained my Lay Preachers certificate after two years of study.

This has meant a lot to me on several levels.
For the first time in my life I feel I've achieved something that contributes to helping those - particularly with mental health issues - that , for various reasons, haven't been as fortunate as I have in learning to live with a debilitating illness. It has been a huge struggle - and there have been many that have played their part - my late husband, my family and friends.
My faith has grown, and it's comforting to know that the Spirit is there for me. I'm also asked to relieve ministers on leave etc at other churches. I don't how long this will continue (I'm 74) - but I love the discipline of researching and writing sermons.

I live in a country that values it's national health - and, except for some co-vidiots, values science and education.

The bad news is not unexpected at my age. Two members of my extended family have life threatening illnesses. A close friend has been diagnosed with Parkinsons and another's husband died suddenly this week.....
I'm very aware that I'm in the Autumn of my life - and I'm determined to live fully whilst it's still possible.

This year has left me with a prayer for humanity - may the pandemic lead us to realize what's important in life. Less "stuff" and more love!
