So apparently voting is getting underway to choose a new leader for the NDP. It's a bit of a thankless job at this point after the meltdown a year ago that left them with 7 (now 6 due to a floor crossing) in their caucus. Still they've got five candidates. Does it matter? Maybe. They could make a comeback, esp. since the left wing of the Liberals can't be too happy with Carney's centre to centre-right positioning of the party. It's not a job I would want right now, though. Elizabeth May is almost better off leading the Greens because they are actually more or less stable, vs. the NDP who are now into rebuilding and repositioning mode.

And here's the list from Wikipedia. Each has links and citations you can follow to learn more.

Lots of questions coming out of this one.

Does who leads the NDP matter when the party itself is kind of on the margins right now?

Can this party be revived? What can they do to revive themselves? Different leadership candidates seem to have different ideas on that.

And, of course, whither the NDP? Are they done as a force in Canadian politics or can they recover their traditional third party spot eventually?

Democratise are rendered down under the republic ... don cha'quano ... or do' chaque no ... ob literation is at hand! Literary impossibilities?

Such stories are mortal ... a complex state compared to immortal where there is nothing to concern one self with ... some read into it with differentiation ... skittz? There he went with the MS Hype Squirrel ... developed as a logic for nuts ... ponder that heap ...

Final Results (as announced today at the Winnipeg convention):
  • Avi Lewis: 39,734 votes (56.0%)
  • Heather McPherson: 20,899 votes (29.5%)
  • Tanille Johnston: 5,159 votes (7.3%)
  • Rob Ashton: 4,193 votes (5.9%)
  • Tony McQuail: 945 votes (1.3%)
Total votes cast: ~70,934 (out of roughly 100,000 eligible members, for a turnout around 71%).

In his victory speech, Lewis declared that “the NDP comeback starts now,”

Something good today! I liked him as a prospect but I didn’t want to say anything and be disappointed. …Sigh. Only 3 more years until the next federal election, after Carney does quiet damage to progress. (I know someone needed to deal with Trump but he’s a stopgap and I happen to think he’s a quiet fascist himself and I hope his anti-environment and austerity and capitalist crony favouring, and my biggest issue with him and the liberals - MAiD policy expansion - are things we can come back from. He’s not progressive he’s just holding off Trump and I don’t even know how well he’s doing at that. We’re regressing too.)

Cheers to Avi Lewis! aka Naomi Klein’s husband. Here’s hoping it’ll get better.

For my part, I am not celebrating yet. I want to see what he actually does before I start trumpeting my return to the fold. He has interesting ideas that could form an NDP platform in 2029 but right now, he needs to get a riding. The NDP needs a leader in the House and well before 2029. It's too late for him to get in on any of the current by-elections (April 13) so somebody might have to step aside. He has run twice already without success (last two general elections), though being a leader sometimes gives one a boost if you pick the right riding.

Human sensibility about politics is incarnating as something of a farce ... another form of metaphor.

Things are just not right as the entire body of the thing is ripened regarding wild experiences counter to academic determination. Real wisdom is laid out on many levels as a spectra of shades; some hot ... some kohl and blue as bruised ... sad*duce*Es it! The entire mess may be prone to the pleasure seekers ... that have no clues! Sanhedrin? The word san for without worked its way into the frae ... co dead laughter?

Same here. I just need something to be a bit happy about today.

He’s got a very smart spouse. That’s a plus.

Meh. The NDP was due for a leftward swing after a run of centre-left leaders. Avi appears to be it. Should be interesting to see if his approach gets them any traction.

Yeah, I hadn't realized until I read profiles of the candidates on the weekend that he was married to Naomi Klein. Quite the artistic family. His sister Jenny, who one of my cousins knew at one time, is an award winning casting director who, with her business partner, has worked on shows like The Boys and What We Do In The Shadows.

I suspect it will lose traction in the current reality. Certainly AB and SK provincial parties are not happy (though I found the latest plan from Nenshi here in AB to be sorely lacking on the environmental front).

OTOH, BC and Ontario NDP, esp. older ones who were around for earlier Lewises, might be down for his approach. Not sure about Quebec. Might get some interest there. One of the NDP's problems has been differentiating themselves from the left wing of the Liberals. Now that the Liberals are swinging centre-right, maybe they could have got away with staying centre-left but Lewis is definitely not going to be mistaken for even a Trudeau Liberal.

Yo, I’ll tell you what I want, what I really really want…

So tell me what you want, what you really really want
I’ll tell you what I want, what I really really want
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna really really really wanna vote NDP

If you wanna be my voter, better bring your toque
Talking ‘bout healthcare, housing—yeah that’s the look
Transit on time and rents we can afford
Not just for the rich up on the West Van fjord

If you wanna be my voter, gotta stand up strong
From Surrey to the Island, yeah we all belong
Cut the ICBC stress, keep Hydro public too
Make life a little easier for me and you

So here’s the deal from sea to sea
You want it fair? Go NDP

Doth a singular person really know such wants until exposed?

Thus flowering in the grinder as miller'd aughter ... flapping about all the bits being scattered ... insubstantial beyond as un stuffed? Out there ...
