Last week Canada got a national mental health crisis line! There is little being said about it. But when you see people posting numbers please think to reply with the Canadian numbers. Some research suggests that if a person is transferred too many times or gets a number that isn't working they will see it as a "sign" and do something unhealthy.

A list of Canadian Distress Centres is at https://thelifelinecanada.ca/…/cris…/canadian-crisis-centres

Please share this!

A number of people have been posting a toll free number today - but it's for the US so let's try to get the word out about the Canadian toll free number and resources!

Thank you for this important information. I will pass it along to at least one person close to me today.

Thanks Justme. Excellent site. I like the Apps that are now available - info & help always at your fingertips - brilliant. And all the additional resources they provide on the site look very useful. I particularly like the "Pattern Interrupters" section.

I had not previously known about this site! Have shared on fb & will do so at work when I'm back there later this week.

A survey amongst young Australians ( from memory ages 18-30) said that they considered mental illness the the major issue facing young Australians.....
On all television programmes relating to mental illness/depression/suicide there is always a list of telephone crisis numbers to ring - here in Oz.

One of them is Lifeline -which I understand is now in many countries. It originated in Australia by my psychiatrist's uncle- Rev Alan Walker.
Other organizations are The Black Dog Institute and R U OK?
Especially for young folks you can also go online - as many prefer that to ringing.

I've always thought we should post those numbers in a corner of this website as we have encountered that situation here at Wonder Cafe.
And possibly post them at churches too if they aren't already.

Depressed folk should remain in their dark little holes ... a word from the greatest authorities!

And they wonder where the bottom line is ... no support system?

An interesting thought. I thought about stickying this thread, but I would rather not have all the discussion with the notice. Would @Justme be okay if I copy her original post to a new thread, that I will then sticky at the top of Health & Aging and lock? Discussion can remain in this one.

Meanwhile, we could consider a more permanent, prominent location for it down the road.

I would super appreciate it. thanks

Could you make the web address clickable, please?

As for getting the word out - communications has been lack lustre on this, in my opinion. I am hoping to find out how to get cards with the info - it's probably best to put cards in the church and people can just grab one - otherwise they have to write the number down (It's not catchy) or take a photo or something.

Lifeline is awesome - they list Canadian resources!

It was only up and running the last few days of November so you're still an "early uptaker" lol

Done and both links are working in the stickied post.

Please consider promoting the thread so that it appears on WC2's front page.

It is great that it is here and that it is stickied. As this is not the most heavily trafficked thread it will miss some members.

Promoting it to the front page ensures that it is seen right away when people are joining us.

Or even a red box in the corner that says National Mental Health line number with the number and by clicking onto it it gives the website. Sort of a similar size that we have for the red boxes for "post reply" "upload a File" and "More Options"?
Just a suggestion.

That would need to be part of a redesign since it impacts the template we use. That said, we will need to redo the templates if we ever upgrade the board to Xenforo 2.0 (which finally came out last week) but any discussion of what that might look like will be initiated in Tips & Techniques or Council News & Business in the New Year.

Agreed. I will promote it and had been thinking about doings so already.. The problem is that as new threads are promoted, it will get pushed down the promoted threads page. There does not seem to be a way to "sticky" a promoted thread short of remembering to fix up the order every time you add a thread to the front page.

In that case is it possible to add another drop down option at the front page right below the masthead?

Somewhere in the same bar with Home, Forums, Members, Code of Conduct and Who we Are? Maybe something more direct than a Help option something like, For Your Health.

And could it be rendered in a different colour (at least the text if not the whole option)? I don't want to make too much work for admins with a structural re-write of the page. But a drop down menu with the possibility of adding more resources as they become available might be helpful for folk just passing through.

Actually, this is the solution I was just investigating in the admin portal. Great minds and all that:). We can add another Page Node (which is what Code of Conduct and Who Are Are are defined as), called For Mental Help Crisis Assistance or something like that and put the information on it. It's a bit of work so I won't do it until evening or maybe on the weekend, but I think that's the best longterm solution. And it it's all "out of the box" unlike a template-based solution like WF and I were discussing, so it will survive upgrades and patches unscathed.

And I just realized I committed to all that without discussing it with anyone on Council. Slight power trip there in support of a good cause:cool:. I see no downside to doing this but, just to make sure I don't ruffle any feathers (you know how sensitive @revsdd can be about these things :D), I will post a link to this thread in Council's private forum to give them a chance to give their .02 worth.

Not saying mental health is unimportant, but I am wondering now which other causes we will take on?

I think there are specific events in mind here, though. And web boards do have a knack for attracting people seeking or needing mental health. However, this is part of why I want Council input.
