I didn't write the following. I've decided to share it because it's important information. If you want to donate during "Pinktober", consider directing your donation to metastatic research where it will make the biggest impact.

Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day. One day in an entire month of “awareness” for the only terminal form of the disease… The following is taken from the Metastatic Breast Cancer Alliance’s account of how today came to be. In the summer of 2009, “Shirley Mertz and Susan Davis co-chaired the advocacy team that traveled to Washington, DC. The group spoke with members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives to educate them and bring awareness of our unique issues living with metastatic disease. The group had four priorities: 1) Eliminating the 24-month waiting period for those on social security before Medicare kicks in. [please note, 15 years later, we are still fighting for this]; 2) Eliminate lifetime limits on health insurance coverage; 3) Addressing the disparity between the reimbursement for IV chemo drugs and chemo pills that are often billed as prescriptions – with a huge co-pay [still an issue that we lobbying for during the Stage IV Stampede]; and 4) National recognition for those living with metastatic breast cancer.”

More than half a million Americans have died from MBC since the MBC Awareness Day proclamation in 2009. Fifteen years later and still no more than 5% of all the popular breast cancer awareness movements are put towards researching metastasis. Instead, the majority of funds raised in these breast cancer campaigns are primarily focused on prevention. Prevention will not save the lives of those living with MBC, and it will not improve the 30% chance of metastasis for breast cancer patients diagnosed at an earlier stage. We need more – not only today, but all year – for stage IV.

100% of every donation funds metastatic breast cancer research. Don’t ignore stage IV.
