About sums it up. There's some byelections to come but barring a major misstep, the Libs will probably win some of those, too. This really shows that politics is not really about how good or well-designed or whatever are your policies, just that you be seen as doing something constructive. Poilievre really needs to learn that instead of continuing to play negative politics. Negative politics only plays at the polls if the public actually agrees with your attacks. If they think you're just sniping and being negative to try to score points or distract from your own lack of marketable policies, negative politics can backfire and work against you.
 
During a press scrum/availability with reporters in Ottawa, Sept 1/26 answering questions about resuming negotiations on a trade agreement after recent U.S. taunts (including social media posts/memes, comments mocking Canada’s military or cadets, and related rhetoric such as renaming Lake Ontario).

For the Trump Administration, it is apparently an insurmountable challenge, or so it seems. :rolleyes: Memes and insults seem to be how they prefer to communicate.

I imagine the United States would prefer a strong Canadian partner to a dependent one.

Not sure how trading dependence on the USA for dependence on the EU (elbows up?) or
further dependence on (socialist?) tax payer funded subsidies will protect Canada's sovereignty.

No doubt Carney's upcoming speech to the EU will clear it all up.

He could lead with

“I, Mark Carney, do swear, that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles the Third.”

And then throw in a Canadian "stolen land acknowledgment" (like the King did when he was in Canada) for good measure.

And end it with two minutes of hate for the USA.

As long as we remain a resource and service based economy, we will need trading partners to buy those resources and manufacture the machines and widgets we need. It is more efficient to buy what someone has already put in the money to develop than roll our own for many things (e.g. chips, fighter planes, subs). The trick is make it a co-dependency, to make sure they need what we offer as much as we need what they offer. But if not the US or EU, it's going to be China or someone else. We can't be totally economically independent and have the lifestyles we have now without trading partners. Trying to live entirely on domestic products and shutting out the rest of the world give us a Soviet economy and we've already see how well that works.

But I am fine with the US being our trading partner PROVIDED they are operating in good faith, which this administration is not. They keep moving the goalposts and trying to grab more and more from us and others. Absent Donald Trump and his determination to dominate rather than partner with the rest of the world, we would not be looking at closer ties with the EU. Bring back the GOP of Reagan and Bush Sr. for God's sake (and believe me, if you went back in time and told 1980s me that I said that, I would be either shocked or embarrassed).

You are clear on the fact that I don't unquestioningly support Carney, right? He makes some good moves, he makes some bad moves. He is definitely an improvement over Justin in a number of regards and I would happily take him over any current or recent Conservative leader (they've been dropping duds ever since Harper and I was never much of a fan of him for other reasons, even if I conceded his general competence as a leader and could probably handle him as a next door neighbour). That said, Carney certainly hasn't won me over as a Liberal voter yet. He was a much better central banker than prime minister. Not sure who I will vote for in 2029, but at present, it remains either Green or NDP unless one of the big parties puts on a better show than I have been seeing.
