It's like every time a the police turn over a rock, there is a pedophile priest under it. From the same organization that calls homosexuality "disordered".

I suggest that anyone who is not a direct sexual abuser is an abuser by proxy if they consent to protecting any abuser.

There's just a metric tonne more rapists among priests. Catholic dioceses are being sued around the globe for protecting their pedophile priests for decades. They're busy hiding and protecting assets from seizure to satisfy those awards. That Catholic Church is a child sex ring with fancy architecture. And so Canadians let them run almost half the schools, because that makes sense.

If they don't like being called a child sex ring, they should not have protected their pedophiles. If they were any other sort of organization, they would be shut down, their properties confiscated and their leaders arrested. Because everyone is supposed to revere people who wear robes and claim a really cool imaginary friend, we don't do that to churches. Especially ex-pope Ratzinger, who we know ordered the coverup. We have his name on the document ordering all abuse accusations to remain in the church and not to call local police.

I had mentioned that I was going to address the topic of consent as far as the actors go. As mentioned, I think that needs it's own thread and it's a little off topic for this one, so I'll just simply say this: Porn films/vids have become big business and gone mainstream, in large part due to the internet. While I don't doubt that their are still predators who coerce young girls into doing films or a casting couch mentality, ethics in the porn industry are driven by money. Many actors (I use that word in a gender neutral sense) now control their own careers and have rules about what they will and won't do in a scene written into their contracts. There are women who now helm the films as directors and producers. It's not the back lot camera crew in a dirty warehouse with no supervision anymore. It has become, if not a universally respectable career, than certainly one that doesn't hold the same stigma as it once did.

Many videos in the bdsm genre actually begin with the actress sitting in a comfortable setting and talking about what she'll be doing and also end with her talking about the scene in a likewise fashion with obvious enjoyment, and they're not usually good enough actors to fake that! lol

We forget, always, that the key component in the whole Vatican/RCC scandal is the "celibacy" requirement. It is not a natural attribute for the vast bulk of humanity. The very small percentage of permanently "asexual" people couldn't possibly fulfill the needs of the RCC for clergy. So the resulting mismatch between supply and demand is painfully and catastrophically awful. I cannot understand why someone cannot say this to the Pope in words that are heard and acted upon.

Big business exploits and I think people going into the sex business, as owners for profit, have likely been exploited along the way, also. I have noticed that just about everyone I have met who is or has been involved in the sex industry, at one point in time has been harmed by it or abused at some point before (or while) they got into it. Except maybe the feminist sex toy store in Vancouver...that’s more about empowerment.

Arguably it has been with the growth in amateur porn and the female creators movement in porn. Not all porn is big business anymore and it's the Internet that has largely facilitated that. Much as it is enabling creators in other fields to bypass business, such as the indie musicians I follow who use social media and crowd sourcing rather than a record deal to get to their audience.

While I completely agree with Mrs. A.'s post, I do think that celibacy and a culture of sexual repression, combined with the authoritarian and patriarchal structures that are enshrined within the Catholic church, provided an environment where sexual abuse could quietly flourish.

I had a thought that porn is exploitation regardless of who’s making it and who is watching. Think about it...those amateurs...would they really want you in their bedroom watching them at their most intimate? Would a young adult want the stereotypical dirty old man in there with them watching and doing whatever he does? I think, most likely, not. Therefore, it’s not really consentual, it’s exploitative...because they don’t even know who is “benefitting”... they don’t get to choose the individuals who watch them.

I have a friend who was a stripper in her 20s and in the nineties also posed for an adult magazine shoot. She basically had two choices for contracts...money upfront or royalties from the use of her photos. She chose the former which was a lot for the hours spent over a few days...but not a lot considering her photos are out there still - very close up and private - and can be used as long as whoever wants to...for “ads” etc. So she gets to be “used” for the rest of her life for whoever’s jollies. That would not be a nice thing to live with.
