Luke 6: A Verse (or Two) at a Time

Not all the Light has descended on us as yet! It is said there is a lot out there hidden in the great void ... said to be nothing as a thin suggestion about waht we know of what's beyond us ...

Thus quad or quat ... as crouched down in chance space ... a gamble over a can of worms?

The Scripture doesn't say why Jesus was in the wheat field ----but is was the Sabbath so just maybe He was on His way to preach in a Synagogue with the Disciples he had and chose to go through the Wheat Field for His purpose -----just spectualing here -------

I personally think that Jesus taking the Disciples into the wheat field was not just a random act ----Jesus went to the wheat field on the Sabbath --

He knew the Law and He knew that the Pharisees had put their own spin on the laws and He knew the Pharisees would follow Him so this was in my view a Planned action and allowing the Disciples to pick the wheat was also a planned action ---Jesus was trying to show the Pharisees that their view of the law of the Sabbath was wrong ----and He was doing it in an open and in your face way -----He was in His Teaching Mode ----teaching the Disciples and the Pharisees the correct way of the Law -----

Deuteronomy 23:25 ---say that you are allowed to Pick the grain with your hands ---but not cut it down to harvest it ------and the Pharisees took the truth and Twisted it to suit their own agenda -----What the Pharisees says is illegal ----is really legal ------

Amplified Bible
“When you come into the standing grain of your neighbor, you may pluck the ears of grain with your hand, but you shall not wield a sickle in your neighbor’s standing grain [to harvest it].

That's so interesting @unsafe. It tells us that the disciples were not stealing from the owners of the grain field. We also know from the Hebrew Scriptures they could have taken the gleanings after the harvest if they were impoverished.

The question of plucking the grain on the Sabbath is separate, no? But I believe we will see Jesus using the standard of reasonableness in v. 3.

Ah but capitalism will provide loop holes for everything in the powerful field of reality ... then there is the opposing abstract ... still dark to those fixated on the brutal forte! it is self evidento only those that are familiar with the item of bother ... thus the onus ... and many deny any consequence; their conscience failing them regarding self evident prima faci ... it was inital and missed! Un noted ...

it is a sophisticated justification to get around the alternate concept if it was ever conceived of during delinquency and elimination ... an over the horizon event?

This incident likely happened between April and early June when the corn was ripe. The preceding text highlights the fact that the Pharisees fast but Jesus and His disciples don't (5:33). The Pharisees see Jesus' entourage going for a long walk in the country on the Sabbath and know that they will get hungry during their journey. So they sneakily stalk Jesus from a distance to see if they can catch Him and His disciples in the act of violating Sabbath rules. Farmers are expected to leave a small portion of their field for traveler munching; so the Pharisees don't perceive Jesus' disciples as ripping off the farmer.

Some versions of the bible have corn and cornfields instead of wheat and wheatfields. It would be more work to remove the husks from corn.

Wheat seems more likely to me because the disciples just rub the heads of grain in their hands.

We all seem to be agreed the disciples were not stealing and the Pharisees were looking for trouble.

Corn means wheat. There was no corn or maize in the Middle East until after the European invasions of the Americas.

Thanks for this. I had no idea.

I just looked it up and discovered the KJV has many references to corn. In those days corn meant grain of any type.

There was no corn in the middle East until about 1500 CE.

On a related note, who has heard of a barleycorn?

It has two meanings. Either a grain of barley or a unit of measurement.

Also I heard an historian's criticism of The Gladiator movie, where Russell Crowe's character walks slowly through wheat field; apparently in Roman times the wheat was taller than a modern human being so Russel Crowe wouldn't be holding his hand at the top of the wheat so I wonder what Jesus' time wheat was like?

Hmmm. Now I am getting a different image of the Pharisees stalking Jesus in the wheatfield

Hey everybody! Here is Luke 6: 3 - 4

Jesus counters the Pharisees with a reference to 1Samuel 21: 1-7. "Have you not read what David did?" He asks them. "When David and his companions were hungry?"

Jesus does not challenge the Pharisees on their interpretation of the Law. Keeping Sabbath is one of the Ten Commandments & the scriptures are clear about doing no work on that day.

Plucking some grain and rubbing it in one's hands may not seem like work to us. But this is not Jesus's point.

Keeping the Law is important. But feeding the hungry is also a moral imperative. I think His response to the Pharisees is brilliant.

All high irony as a grain of truth in the elephants aye as it looks over a ridiculous situation of someone attempting to out equal the other ... who happens to be cornered in survival mode ... know when you are up against a weasel and have much small assistance on hand! It needs a certain quality about it to overcome the double BS! It flies both ways ... as observed as evidence to a point in the middle ... where 2 lines are drawn ... X? N compassing what ...

Then there is the query about what we know and what we don't and how authorities deal with the deficits in know how!

In conclusion given the mess this phere is in ... we haven't gotten too far in the understanding part ... Phoebe? Yah! Imagine when the grain of truth hits the grinder ... all the rest being myth and poorly understood! Folk simply did not wish to know and complexity grew hyperbolically ... hypo bowl coming back at yah ... just word of logos ... things are crazy! Que Lues are thin ...

The Pharisees were sure to have known the story of David and the Holy Presence. There's irony in Jesus asking, "Have you not read ....?"

Jesus is challenging them as a learned man.

Yet David was said to be a small thing to be divided ... and perhaps not real or true? Its like black and white in the schizoid ... hungry on one hand and pssst 'don the other ... do not Don that attitude in essence! Mods and modes are not real ... only abstract! These can be altered a shade or two ... as temper is lost ... one should quench ide ...
