Luke 6: A Verse (or Two) at a Time

As for this verse, I think it shows just how much he rubbed the leadership the wrong way and vice versa. They weren't just confronting him when they happened across him, they were spoiling for a fight.
Absolutely! Other biblical narratives can possibly be interpreted as friendly debate but I think this is a stretch.

I wonder if the Pharisees' animosity was apparent to the others in the synagogue. Jesus is proving to be charismatic and compelling and perhaps being a rebel adds a little appeal to His persona.
Pharisaic criticism of Jesus' violation of the Law is decisively refuted if you believe His miracles are the result of God's power.
In his book "Jesus the Magician" Morton Smith of Columbia U. collects the late first and early 2nd century evidence of what the Jews thought of Jesus. No one suggests that Jesus was just a rabbi teacher who did no miracles. Instead, they claim that his miracles were either demonically empowered or magically induced hallucinations.

In Hebrew the word "Pharisee" (Hebrew "perushim") means "separate ones" in the sense of people separated by their lfe of holin

I have encountered a similar idea with three possibilities. The third possible explanation is that Jesus was mentally ill. I think they actually said " a madman".

The Jews of the first 2 centuries also said Jesus was the illegitimate son of a Roman soldier named Panthera and a spinner named Mary. So they agree with early Christians that Joseph is not His natural father. They add that "he made his living shamefully as a beggar."

They add that "he made his living shamefully as a beggar."
Well this is interesting. Jesus often took it for granted that he and the disciples would be given food and shelter as they travelled around the countryside.

Does anyone here think Jesus might actually have been a Pharisee? This has been suggested by a few writers including Amy-Jill Levine. I haven't read her argument for this possibility.

This isn't quite it, and that particular argument isn't pointed out in the summary, which does, however, suggest that Jesus' values were quite aligned with those of the Pharisees. It's a summary of a book of essays about Pharisees, to which Levine is a contributor. Scholars outline history of the Pharisees and roots of harmful anti-Jewish stereotypes

Different spin on the same thing, really. Jesus sees it as the community sharing. The "establishment" sees it as him and his disciples begging from their followers.

I have only read one of Amy-Jill Levine's books and I forget the name of it. It was about the parables of Jesus.

It was a good read. She injects humor into her writing and it sometimes pops up in unexpected places. Levine is an amazing advocate for understanding between Christians and Jews. I understand she is also a fabulous speaker.

I understand she is also a fabulous speaker.

She is, I went to a conference, maybe the Canadian Progressive group, some years ago, I think at St. Paul's United. It was, curiously, the weekend before Holy Week, so she, a Jewish woman, gave the sermon at the Palm Sunday service. She was a great speaker, is a great mind, I was really glad to have met her in the flesh.

The mini series Roots had a great scene which demonstrated the reliability of oral tradition. A descendant of Kunta Kinte went to Africa and listened to an elder recite the family history. In the long recitation there was a brief mention of "Kunta Kinte who disappeared in the forest". This was the moment he was captured by the slave traders.

There is only one Gospel reference to how Jesus and His disciples supported themselves financially. His female disciples who traveled with Him worked to serve them and support them financially:

"The Twelve were with Him as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom 7 demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Herod's steward Chuza, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their resources (Luke 8:2-3)."

Joanna later becomes a courageous missionary apostle in association with Paul's ministry:

"Greet Andronicus and Junia (the Greek form of the Hebrew name "Joanna"), my relatives, who were in prison with me.; they are prominent among the apostles, and they were in Christ even before I was (Romans 16:7)."

To qualify as an apostle, Joanna (Junia) met the requirement to be an apostle (see 1 Cor. 9:1) because, as a Jesus follower from the beginning, she probably witnessed Jesus' resurrection appearance to the 500+ (1 Cor. 15:6). Joanna was not only imprisoned for her Christian witness; earlier she had the
courage to join other Galilean women in maintaining the vigil at Jesus' cross (Luke 23:49). She continued her service at the tomb, where she came to help prepare Jesus' corpse for burial (24:10), but instead saw a vision of angels announcing Jesus' resurrection.

Early church Fathers celebrated Junia's status as a female "apostle," but eventually her name was changed to "Junias," a man's name, to refute the claim that women could have a leadership role in the apostolic church. Thus, the male name "Junias" appears instead in the KJV. But "Junia" was a common woman's name and "Junias" was virtually unprecedented as a man's name!

And I doubt the guards would have been drawing lots over the clothes of a beggar after the resurrection, unless that was just written to match prophesy.

Hey everybody! Here is Luke 6: 8

Jesus boldly calls the man with the withered hand to come forward. He knows the Pharisees will disapprove of any healing on the Sabbath but he intends to proceed.

What is Jesus doing here? Is he being righteous or is he being foolish?

Is it important for the people to see him defy the Pharisees? This is a more public setting than the grain field.

Jesus has also faced opposition from the Pharisees for his forgiveness of sins. (Luke 5: 21). Sabbath observance is not their only dispute.

Is Jesus establishing his authority here or is he being a hothead? Couldn't he have pulled the man aside and healed him quietly?

Such stories keep coming round as reincarnations of things that occurred in one story that echoes deeply in the great unknown ... many would never step there as it is frightening as if they would learn of change ... it may be a joust (Foust) or just a donkey being mulish. Mores to mull over ... some people have none atoll ... a empty isolationism? Just no connections and communication withoout a story, myth, etc. because reality just doesn't cut it ... too brutish by far ... because of the non appreciation of the alternate. It may appear as a poltergeist ... shadow of a god as a lost ideal ... these are out there to be found!

Something to move your mores upon ... a floater? Now that's something else for the stones to deal with ... some roll in space contrary to the flat out schemes, like tara torah building (see that article about Shark Tank regarding Trump's normality in land grabs)!

Thus great piles, heaps and other unmentionable BS ...

PS: one person even said that what Trump declared abut Nalvney fell right in with Putin, it's down wrong ... and it'll come up again! What we can expect in the west when evil is said to be normal in the offspring ... Bois will be buoyed by wild wills and great busts in systems that are not perfect regardless of how trumped up it is ... it is never virtue ... that is something that is beyond us. Next step please ... time to move on ...

I personally think a great deal was written into the Gospels to match prophesy.

The authorities couldn't be demonstrated to be in err! Thus the lie was created as well lain down ... profound eh?

And there is the matter of vast belief in one book of entombed myth (they are buried there) along with a bit in common (Jihn) John that declares just the opposite about where light resides! Learning such things gives the pious some Heb AE Jeb ais as Je Ba sale ... thus the word itself slips and creeps in evolution ... this stuff can be turned inside out t reveal the core ... spatial reflection? How time goes ... in ripples, wrinkles and rackets ... many ups, downs, etc.

@Luce NDs Please take any discussion of Trump etc. over to Politics.

There another dissolution of connected ideas ... fluidly vaporized --- Freudian! Virtue of sublimation ... condensation of the essence, w/o liquidity!

Supports the 4 elements: earth, water, wind and plasma ... intense flames! No water in arid humus ... a dry British glow like aura ... possibly connected to the theory of Ouranos as a deviate viper that bites our behind ... for reasons complex in the story ... chaotic connections?

Yes religion and politics can be connected but as your host here, I request that you post your political material in Politics. Please and thank you.
