Yeah, world building was his real forte. He was a scholar of Germanic and Nordic languages and literature and it shows. At LAST I finished the final Lord of the Rings book...my gosh, Tolkien put a LOT of effort into these books!
I was impressed with him before I read the books and now I'm really impressedYeah, world building was his real forte. He was a scholar of Germanic and Nordic languages and literature and it shows.
Try the Silmarillion sometime. It's a slog but there's also some great stuff in it. Basically the Bible of Middle Earth. Fills in some blanks about where things like the balrog and Sauron originated, too. Of course, my favorite Tolkien for a nice, breezy read (at least compared to his other works) is The Hobbit.I was impressed with him before I read the books and now I'm really impressed

I has a sad today. One of my library school profs passed away (cancer). She also worked with my wife for many years so I saw her socially now and then after I graduated.
Just keep in mind that everything published after the Silmarillion is posthumous, compiled from his notes and manuscripts by his son Christopher and various helpers. Even the Silmarillion had quite a bit of posthumous editing, IIRC.Sorry for your loss.
Yes, I like the Hobbit - read it twice now as I read it again before the Lord of the Rings. I do want to read some of his other works but will take a rest and read some of the books already in the house that I haven't read before
