I ache all over from chipping ice yesterday and then scooping copious amounts of water off same sidewalk onto the lawn later in the day.

My sidewalks are a frigging nightmare, but it's the entire street, not just me. There's some really inconveniently placed sump pump discharges that run into the sidewalk, and the snow banks prevent the water from exiting, so it just freezes and thaws, and you could skate on the sidewalk.

It's rough when you are responsible for keeping yours clear but the build up is beyond your control

We are not responsible for our sidewalks. But the sidewalk plow is quite useless under the circumstances, because there's nowhere for the water to go until the banks melt back far enough, and the ground thaws a bit, so that the soil can absorb it.

We walk dog on the street until we get to the end of the street, where the sidewalks don't have the same problem, due to different slopes/levels/drainage. Early spring in Central Ontario is a messy season.

Nice! We are responsible for our sidewalks and face fines if they aren't cleared within 24 hours of weather or melting

Agreed that it's nice, but we historically get a boatload of dual lake effect snow, so it would be difficult to do. I have a driveway service as well, that plows to the back of whatever car(s) are in the driveways, but at least it takes care of the stuff thrown up by the plow.

I have a friend who lives on the Gaspe, and they're on Day 5 of an awful storm. He's run out of places to put snow, despite a neighbour who invited him to use a corner of his property for excess.

Yes, sometimes room for snow is hard to find...they were saying that we had a drier winter than normal this year

Bad back today after trying to clear around street drain that was backing up. Water comes up over sidewalk and freezes so wanted to get the water moving. Maybe time at last to pack it in trying to rent a house and find an apartment where somebody else can deal with spring freeze/thaw cycles.

Take care of yourself and don't overdue things.

I have a game plan around this stuff, because I find it hard to get stuff done to maintain the house, and it costs me more and more to pay OP to do it. No son handy anymore, my Hippie's gone, my boarder is no use, my daughter is hard to pin down, and she's single now, so no male contribution to muscle stuff.

Plan is at age 70 (I'll be 62 this year), I'm selling the house and moving somewhere. Gives me 8 years to empty it, sort out a few minor problems (I have a piece of asbestos that needs to go, for instance), replace current unwieldy dog with something more portable, perhaps (I literally can go nowhere unless my daughter comes to stay here; Lucy is that awful).

I get lots of male offers to help me around the house and yard but almost no follow through on actual help.

Can at last things change ... and then we are beyond the institutional monument as momentous!

It passed in an instant ... a flash?
