Just found out the results for Alix - not as good as I'd hoped, but way better than I expected...now we'll see if the drama dies down or not - though I don't expect it to with the letters to the editor continuing to still come in.

You can vote for multiple councillors and school trustees? I can't even vote for both boards here which is silly IMO, either both are important and have an effect on me or neither do.
Looks like all incumbents here, frustrating after watching a recorded forum. Of the 5 incumbents it was pretty obvious that he had the least in terms of plans.

They are in rural areas which usually (at least in Ontario) elect councillors at large hence the list. Urban areas, with much higher population densities, use wards so you only vote for 1 for your ward.

As for school boards, in Ontario, you vote for the board your property taxes go (generally where your kids go or would go if you had any for those without). So RCs vote separate and everyone else votes public. Again, whether it's at large or ward depends on the community.

We're not in a rural area. We are though in a city that doesn't have wards. This city has a population of around 70,000.

Last. :)

70,000 would be a bit small for wards, though I think Waterloo is on a ward system and they are still under 100K.

Morning came too early :( Skunk sprayed somewhere at our end of the block sometime after 7 AM so the air stinks.

Hate it when that happens. We've been having it a lot in our neighbourhood this fall.
We usually have it all spring and summer and it stops by now.

One thing I learned last night from some of the election panel discussions we watched: when the ballot isn't completely filled out (ie don't vote for the total number allowed) it is a spoiled ballot and not counted.

I forget the law on that in Ontario. It's too bad because I know some people, esp. those without kids in school, would rather not vote for school board and don't usually follow that race well enough to make an informed decision. Even I've never been particularly good about following that one. Last time, I voted for someone from my church for school board since I knew her background and felt it was a fit.

I haven't been able to find any confirmation on that for Alberta as I'd never heard it before...that would certainly change results too if a number of votes can't be counted.

Those Letters to the Editor..........are you obliged to publish every one you receive? I confess I haven't given this any thought over the years. Nowadays I don't read a newspaper of any type. The local one is a waste of paper in my opinion. The city ones aren't terrifically relevant. Get my news online from several sources.

Unless they are submitted without a name (completely anonymously) or are hateful or have actually person's names attached in a slanderous way...generally, I don't get many but one leads to a bunch more till something else grabs their attention.

As an independent newspaper I'm not obligated to publish anything that's submitted to me...that said, if I want the continued support of my advertisers, communities and readership, it is in my best interest to publish as much as I can from them...regarding the Letters - people want them in - not the ones from the village hotheads who are always complaining though, and again, if I put the nice letters in, I can't discriminate against the hotheads, just because they are hotheads (as long as they play by the rules).

Not true for all Alberta municipalities. Our votes get counted while we are there, so we can confirm the count number goes up and ballot was spoiled or some sort of mistake. Many don't vote for school trustee. I did this time, but there have been times in the past where I didn't bother to look into the candidates.

Are there not regional issues in the city where people want representation? In our ward there's a big group who are pushing for the taxis, against companies like Uber. That's not true across the city. Also suburb vs. downtown issues especially related to transit.

To be honest, I think the switch from at large to ward may have more to do with practicality than representation, though. In a city like London with c. 350,000 people, we have 14 councillors. The list for an at large election for that number of positions would require a small booklet. Having 14 Wards with 1 rep per ward makes it manageable. Regional representation comes out of it, but it's not always the goal. My ward has a pretty broad spectrum in it (from suburban professionals to students to working class and even some rural) making it hard to say where it stands on a given issue.

There may be, I'm not sure. This city has grown quickly in the past 10 or 15 years. I think the bigger issues may be divided into city/county. I haven't been a resident here that long to know if there are issues between areas. Many areas have neighbourhood associations which might do some of that. My sense is that the city has been fairly responsive to citizen concerns. Of course, they can't please everyone. @GordW might have a better sense.

Controversial letters to the editor are good for God's plan ... as he/she/it likes a good sol conflict as near to a football game ... soccer style of course. Soul collisions with impact increase god's reputation for making people stunned ...

From the beginning creation made opposing teams ... in atomic particles to neutron stars ... with people entangled in between as male, female and other controversial ID's ... then there are the ups-downs, side to side, and back and forth types giving the dance a reputation as a real discourse on entanglement ... especially face to face when mixed tongues cause chaos ... and it is best to shut up and enjoy the spittin' exchange ...

Like sects it can be whet, warm and dark ... some say occult because you can't talk about it ...

There are some suggesting it. Personally I am not convinced it leads to good governance. Even in a ward system the council is duty bound to make decisions in the best interests of teh city as a whole, not based on "this is best for my ward".

Oh and once again I am LAST
