It's not a big deal to open a computer. And once it's open you see everything at a glance. But I have a strong suspicion the disk isn't in there. Laptops don't have a whole lot of empty space in them.

Put in another DVD. See if it works. If it does, and if the computer is still working normally, there is probably nothing alien in it.

So we're back to the lying option. Or, in an extreme case, you could set fire to the library.
 
If you find a disc ... give it a spin ... see if there is a magnetic tail therein ... DOS et do well?

Graeme...I put the DVD in...it didn't play...I opened the drive and it was gone! Less than 30 seconds! No lie...no DVD. I can play other DVDs in the drive. Desk is bare except for the laptop - it is not beside, underneath or anywhere around the outside of the laptop.
 
Is there a singularity anywhere in your house? In that case, your DVD is probably now being enjoyed by seven-limbed beings in a parallel universe.

Unofficial plan is to by a new mattress for my bed today (have needed a new one for 5 yrs and can't put it off any longer). We ended up spending the afternoon in Stettler yesterday - which wasn't the plan - shopping as mom needed some items...I bought a new pair of sandals.

It couldn't be any worse than the dreadful Ghostbusters 2 was.
 
Mattress has been ordered and should be here in a week. We also visited 2 new (to us) greenhouses - both are definitely worth a repeat visit.
