Any respite care options? I know that when I did IT support for a home care company that used to be in our corporate group, one of the programs they supported was respite care, where a provider went in maybe 3 hours twice a week to give family members a break and time to get out.

This. My stepmother would not have made it through the period immediately before Dad went into longterm care without home care. That said, BA's in Alberta and I have no idea how the system works out there. Here, it's by hospital or doctor referral to a local body called a CCAC that does the case management and brings in one of their provider agencies to do the care.

Either the doctor or the hospital can start the process. You can also refer yourself to intake. (In Alberta) An assessment will determine what services you get. Being palliative puts you at the front of the line.

As mom is not in the medical system - this weekend being an exception (and doesn't count as she refused to take the medication) - she is not eligible for homecare...yes, we have asked. No respite either...I just take off if I have to for appointments, walks with the niece, paper deliveries, or just to hide in my room, etc.
