Jesus Christ Superstar

I enjoy it.

The lack of resurrection doesn't upset me when I consider that artistically, it leaves the story unfinished and at the height of Christendom who didn't know how the story ends?

I don't consider the musical scripture. I do think it tries, to be faithful to the scripture in that it is concerned with the relationships between the principal characters. To do that it has to take liberties.

Reviews, cautions from trusted friends and advisors.

When it comes to artistic works, I generally only trust my own judgement. There've been too many cases where my opinion of something hasn't matched that of the reviewers and even trusted friends for me to use any other basis.

To each their own.

Do you remember the 3 magi on camels walking across the horizon at the very end? Not sure what version.

See, he's the one main cast member (playing Judas) I don't really know. Was going to search him up tonight. I see he's mainly a Broadway star (e.g. was the Hamilton cast member who famously addressed Mike Pence from the stage when Pence attended a performance), which is probably part of why I don't know him that well. Haven't been following that scene much in recent years. Keala Settle was a surprise to me when she turned up in The Greatest Showman, too, and for much the same reason.

PVR at the ready! I love the music in this show. Our church youth troupe performed it many years ago - so I have some great memories from that too (y)

The main reason I do not like Jesus Christ Superstar is that it does not portray Jesus as being divine.

As an alternative, I suggest the movie "The Gospel of John." It much more accurately presents the story of Jesus - including the resurrection.

Love it. Bought the album before it became a musical when I was a teen

Saw the fabulous version at Stratford five or so years ago.

Andrew Lloyd Webber is notoriously anal about his musicals. He really demands adherence to his vision so I expect it will be very true to script

It’s worth finding the DVD and watching it with the commentary. Directed by Norman Jewisson and gosh forget guy who was Jesus. They talk about filming it, the other actors. The fellow who was Judas who got AIDS and died. How the musical challenged their spiritual life. Interesting.
I heard something about the guy who played Peter in the original version later went on to do porn.

Damn, I nailed that one. See my "review" of JCS upthread. :)

As you can imagine, I have no issue with that aspect of it. Jesus as human is a perfectly valid understanding in my universe. Recommendation noted, though. I'm always up for a good Biblical movie.

Alice Cooper as King Herod - gotta love that casting!

Wonder if he'll be wearing a snake.

Sounds urban legend-y but you never know. Sometimes a guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do to make a buck in the entertainment business.

Good call.

that to not depict Jesus as divine means to not depict him as the one who can conquer death and hell. Perhaps that's why there's no depiction of the resurrection in the piece. That may please others, but not me.

It's a little dry, but more accurate.

I showed this and other versions of the Easter story to a confirmation class. I was impressed when

they watched the Andrew Lloyd Webber version, they could pick out all the biblical characters.

OTOH, I went to a live pageant at an evangelical church. Well done, but so not me.

Theology do make a difference on how one views things.
