How to deter dogs.

Just keep going....
We got several dog owners in the subdivision and some dog owners that seem to pick our subdivision as a walking ground.
The dogs seem to have gotten used to poopling right in front and around our communal mailboxes at the end of the street.
At first, you could still dodge it somewhat, but now it is all over the place. I take my 89 year old neighbour for walks to the mailbox every other day to get him going and he does not see the poop.
I have thought of getting a big box of pepper to solve the problem, but I am worried a bit about damaging the dogs.
I also have thought of putting up a sign announcing the pepper treatment and asking them to keep a their dogs away. One of the dogs lives right next to the mailbox and runs free ( and he cannot read).
Besides, it is a rainy wet season, so the pepper might not work.
Any suggestions? (One of the neighbours without dog has already has put up a sign to please clean up after your dog, so nice doesn’t seem to work).

Does your community have "stoop and scoop" by-laws? If so, contacting by-law enforcement would be an option.

We have lots of dogs in our area, too, but I find the people are mostly pretty good about cleaning up after their pets. There's the odd one who bags it then leaves the bag sitting there, but even that's rare.

A big sign. Or several. Please pick up. Please take pride in our neighbourhood. Video surveillance. Poop will be DNA tested if left behind and you will be fined!

Most people walk dogs. Enforce work and after work. So get some neighbours to help by watching/sitting there

It is a problem for lots of condo buildings too. It is that same phenomenon of why people don’t do dishes in a communal kitchen

Luckily most places I walk with my dog are spotless. People take pride

Alternate pride: "I'm too good to be responsible for such crap!"

Stuff that drives some leaders in blind philosophy ... sometimes identified as psychosomatic behaviour!

Is there a garbage can right next to the mailboxes? That might help, along with a sign reminding dog walkers of the need to "stoop and scoop". Also, loose dogs? Around here, quite verboten. Even loose cats get a raised eyebrow...

And when I said "sign", I meant a "real" municipal sign. "Stoop and scoop By-Law 104 (c) in effect in this neighbourhood. Max penalty $X,000." Or however your city/town words its "behave yourself" signs...

But I didn't think of bags; Mendalla did. A bag dispenser is a great idea. The employees that run around emptying city garbage cans can just have re-fills of rolled poop bags in their truck.

And according to the Tao of Poo ... it goes on in deep fecundity!

Some do not understand that ambiguity is fecund choice ... ripe?

Assuming they have them. That would be part of what I hope contacting by-law enforcement would do.

It really annoys me to see such irresponsible dog walkers. Several municipalities now have "stations" with poop bags and a place to dispose of them on a post. That might be a good spot to have one of those.

Around here, you only see those in popular parks, not neighborhoods. I am not even sure the little park in my area has one.

That's how they do it in the U.K. as well, and the little bins are frequent, so you never have to search. Here's slightly dated info on pilot programs in Waterloo and North Vancouver: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/kitchener-waterloo/waterloo-dog-poop-power-energy-jaworsky-1.4082421

In the city in northern AB they had them mostly in popular dog walking trails. There could be an argument to get them installed if the neighbourhood asked. (And pressured)

Sometime you see little bags of poop hanging in trees along the path. You may find it offensive. But what is often really happening is someone is walking their dog, and they leave it hanging there and pick it up again on the way back.

Haven't seen it myself, but as long as the pickup does happen, I am cool with it.

Same here. I have seen the official signs in another subdivision. I would not go as far as empty out a dog poop garbage can, and nobody else would. There are several potential dogs as culprits, one I observed lives right next door to the mailbox ( it is practically at the end of their property) and belongs to the guy who is supposed to be the janitor of all the rental units in our subdivision. The owner is lazy and a liar and fixes things only if you call him every day for three months. Then there are two more with little dogs who walk them to the end of the street ( where the mailbox is) and back. I am glad they haven’t pooped on my lawn lately. However, if calling the county- what would they be doing? They are not going to be watching the area. Maybe a more official sign.

That would be good. There's a trail around here where those bags of poop start around for a long time.
