How much money would it take for you to move?

For me moving isn't about money. We moved from Ontario to BC almost 20 years ago so we could get out of the rat race that is Toronto and explore another area of the country. We do not regret this move and it has been good. We are looking at moving again soon and money is only part of the equation.

I am glad to have been able to live in different parts of the country. There are costs involved, that aren't just money costs such as longer distance relationships, etc. It is a big decision.

ah chemgal, the real question, should you move?
Being within a day's drive of the city is good for keeping up with your sister and her family, and having access to the medical specialists.
I presume it is a better opportunity for your spouse.

I'd say go as you can always move back.

@ChemGal , In your case, I would take particular notice of your health issues.

You don't want to go backward and start new doctors, new treatments, new

education for the educators.
Most of the doctors isn't an issue. New GP - although I've been through so many due to them moving that it no longer seems like a big deal. Most of my specialists aren't doing anything for me other than just quick follow up appointments. I wouldn't even necessarily keep up with the same type, 1 specialist within the new place is probably enough and I'm open to what specialty that would be and they would all fall within more common ones, so not really long wait lists.

For my hematologist, he covers a very large area. Anywhere from BC, territories to SK and he would still be my doctor. I have already been offered flights for medical appointments. To stay on the treatment I'm on, once/year is what I need to do in person. The minute I'm outside of city limits for a residence blood products get shipped.

There might be another job opportunity more local too, although that one is not a for sure thing.
The details of the job that would involve moving really needs to be ironed out much better, it might be a better opportunity or it might basically be the same thing in a new place for more money. If the latter, I doubt we'll move although depending on how badly they want him there the pay increase might be worth it, plus there's the issue of what happens if we don't go if the company really wants him there.

In my heart, to move or not is all about the call. Money is great if it comes. If not, meh, I trust in God to meet all our needs as we respond to him.

chuckle@ "rat race that is Toronto." :ROFLMAO:

Oh, the things a few people say about Canada's best #1 city.

Are you denying there's a rat race in Toronto? If so, I would suggest you go to Union Station at rush hour and see for yourself. Or spend some time in a car on the Gardner at the same time of day.

There are a few rats here in Toronto. Didn't know they were in a race. :D There are some mice, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, and bunnies here too. Toronto is great for everyone.

You could not pay me enough to live in the GTA.

There's no accounting for taste.

Millions from around the world have recognized the greatness of Toronto and the GTA. Toronto is the world's most multicultural city where people of every nation come to play and stay.

Canada has many beautiful cities - Charlottetown, St. John's, Saint John, Halifax, Montreal, Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver. There is only one Toronto.

I'm glad I lived in the GTA for a couple of years. It was a good experience. I'm more glad I left.

I can't even imagine considering the move you're thinking of making! I would still be within driving distance of the city where it's possible to go there and back in a day, although not much else would get done.
Leaving my country, family and friends behind will be a hard decision, but the future here looks worse than moving :(

I wouldn’t leave my job other than retiring. I got the best colleagues you can have, wouldn’t take any chances.
One idea with regards to money, was that if I would win the lottery, I would pay off my brother’s mortgage so he can retire ( he can’t because of having to pay his divorcing wife out), in return for the right to live in the upstairs of the house once my mother no longer lives there. I then would have a place to stay in Berlin and could live 6 months here and there.

The likelyhood of this to happen is 1: 26 millions or so. In the meantime, I just going to plant a couple more trees into my backyard....

I was encouraged to move to USA over the years. Would have meant progression faster but I love Canada and could not leave family. My husband would also not have considered it.

I looked at mississsuga job years ago, but would not do commute or live in gta. Money was significantly better.

Now, I want to stay close to family.

I find most people don't want to move.that I interview. They want to be close to family

I was offered positions on the other side of the world ... a hard choice when family members were approaching ends ...

My decision resulted in dissolution of relationship with the employer that deemed my service no longer required ... one large corporate entity was critical of what happened to the hollowed out composite of a service industry ... and continued on the same path for efficiency ... no further thought required!

I could've liven in Darwin ... that city portrayed in the movie Australia ... the wife worried about brown snakes, spiders Salties ... crocs? Here I worry about brutis' republicans that have a hate on about demos unknown wee peoples ... generally overlooked!

Far out vision of the Pale Riders ... vision fails eM ... corpses float because of the airs impressed ... nonsense? Folk of you dreams as aspired ...

There are certainly moves I would not make. Health wise, I require a place that doesn't have a doctor shortage and has a hospital that is properly staffed.
I would say no to an international move. Most inter-provincial moves would be out of the question too.

I can't really make a tradeoff of being around my nephews vs. money. At the very least I will be sticking around until my sister's maternity leave ends, once she's back at work visits are more limited. The money can make a difference in terms of if we're losing out by having to travel to see people, stay in a hotel room, etc.

Your sister, bil and nephews are still a day's drive or a quick flight away. I expect you will be going into your current city a couple of times a year for dr. visits. You could add family visits then. Your family could go see you.

When I lived in Peace River my parents and 1 sister came to see me. When I lived in Inuvik my parents came to see me.
Both sisters have visited me in BC.
My advice move and have an adventure while you are young.

I think I know the city you are considering and the landscape there is quite lovely. Lakes and forests. Except for the longish winter I could live there. My asthma does limit me when it is cold. That's why my current place is such a good fit.
