How Jesus Became God.

Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, with countless anonymous others, imagined human being perfected in and through the natural order.

They did not carry the day.

Nor, however, were they lost, George. The New England Transcendalists are an honoured part of UU tradition and many of us do seek ways to live in their footsteps.

I was immersed in Emerson's love of language, finding there a familiar spirit.

You rightly note the New England transcendentalists as leaven in the UU community.

Melville dissented, seeing through the premise and promise of increased mastery by increased proficiency of means.

The mass mind is now well conformed to the totalizing agenda of the state. Dissent is risk.

Here is an essay on nature and our place in it:

Cheers...

Of course, we are a religion born in heresy (Unitarianism, in particular, was persecuted at various times in Christian history) so being dissenters isn't exactly new for us. :D

Dissent is only risk if dissenters go it alone. When it becomes a movement, the risk to each individual decreases. At the same time, it is the individual dissenters taking risks, the Rosa Parks of the world, that inspire movements to happen so the risk must be taken. A conundrum, isn't it?

I imagine a great and growing shift of attention in persons not yet wholly united but well on the way. Each day brings the promise of critical mass nearer. In that moment decision will be imperative; the way of life or the ways of death?

If we are to be as gods, shapers of a world beyond nature, we had best be clear on our motives. This in particular for the 'helmsmen' who chart and steer the present course.

And, with a nod to Craig, mindful of brevity's boundary...

George, I appreciate that if you are going to be borderline incoherent, that you make the effort to be briefly borderline incoherent.

Well, George, it is not technological mastery but technology in the service of power and money that has us on the threshold of a catastrophe. Science alone is neutral, or a-moral, and applied science (technology) can be used for both good and evil, depending on the viewpoint from which we use it.

Have you read Jacques Ellul on this, or George Grant? Each in his own way questions the neutrality of technology. Might it be that a few employ technology to constrain and manage the many?

ty, George's HS, for the In-SPIRIT-ation

(any tool is made for a reason and for purposes -- 'so g_d, why'd you make reality? oh--OHHH...ty...i grok now...that's kinda...hrm...')

Also, we already know what the best society is...its been around for longer than we have

ANTS

So we're failures right from the beginning

But hopefully that can be redeemed with our technologies (wait, our? Susan Blackmore has stuff to say on Temes...) -- editing souls, bodies, minds, etc

Fitting in total harmony, instead of this rampant chaos, with reality. Jesus' Second Coming: when humanity realizes the Truth -- ANTS! (and those antennae would look so neet)

You do know how to locate clips relevant to our shared thinking in this place. I am left para-phrasing Mae West: So many things to consider, so little time to appreciate them.

"Borderline incoherent."

Thanks for noticing. Always pushing the boundary of the received discourse in the hope of liberating a discourse to come.

Song comes quick to mind: I am a little tea pot, short and stout. Here is my handle, here is my spout. When I get my steam up, then I shout - "Tip me over and pour me out."

Appreciated first minutes of the Ellul clip. Will watch more as determined by the wind.

Just finished Ellul, in the backyard with Chickedees bright all round. Serendipitous...!

Have long relationship with Ellul as author. Read voraciously in late twenties - early thirties. Vid nicely summarizes insights I found in and between the lines of his text.

Mumford, Ellul and Grant had light to share. I basked in it! There were others beside; living and dead, near and far.

Thanks for sharing the find...!
