Yeah, I've heard of ppl claiming they get headaches from wireless. They are convinced smart meters are really bad, and cell phones cause cancer.

They are probably all natural types. This is the West Coast. It's almost normal to meet people who are into natural alternative lifestyles, or something. it is normal, in fact. One of my ex's exes used to put different crystals around the room to keep out bad energy. An employee of my mom's old store, same thing. Like I said, it's not as fringe here. There are wealthy - otherwise stable - people who can afford all kinds of weird interests, too. This is like the Southern California of BC.

Doesn't surprise me. There will be some who ask that you don't cook anything other than vegan food, too. Have come across that.

Does no wireless mean no cell phones at all, though?Technically, they are wireless. As are remote controls. laundry would also be a hassle.

Then there's this confusion. Can't tell if it's $1000, or $1500, but $1500 is way too high. Looks like they put it under the $1000 category to get clicks. I hate that. That's a deterrent itself.

i have an apartment worth of shared furniture in storage on the mainland that would be a major feat to get here, so I just keep paying for storage. I didn't think I'd settle here long.

This could be cute but it doesn't even have a kitchen...or a kitchenette with a sink. One would have to use the small pedestal sink in the bathroom. That's bad. Even for 700/ month.

IAM surprised by some of this, like only cooking vegan? In a rented apartment?

I can see if you rent a bedroom in another’s persons place, becoming a roommate. Then there would be house rules , who cleans th ekitchen , who cleans thebathroom, smoking, overnight guests.........

But a rental apartment? Wow. Certainly would not pass occupancy rules and tenant rights in Ontario

They can’t even say no pets now, though many try. A current issue being discussed with renters, my daughter is currently looking for a place, is marijuana use


You mention looking for a room mate perhaps. There must be web sites for that. But I wonder if instead of finding anew place and looking for a room mate, if you should look for someone who’s looking for a room mate? Kijiji lists rentals by room mates required

I'm not surprised, here. Not if it's a suite in a home. If the owners live upstairs/ downstairs. I didn't inquire, but it's the only one still up that I was considering since yesterday. All qa the rest were snapped up in a day. There are some one bedrooms $1100-1800. Some at the higher end...I really don't know how they get away with it. And, older apartments...generally there are not that many here, and they are often low-rise walk ups (stairs), and they are run by management companies and don't include anything. So, the rent price seems okay, but then you have the extra bills.

Ideally I'd just like a decent, bright space, for rent by owner. It doesn't have to be brand new, or perfect (my last place was close to perfect so everything looks worse)..but clean and homey would be good.

I may enquire about the other one. The ad says cable internet (Ethernet?) included. I'm not keen on being hyper vigilant about scents and chemicals in my own (rented) "home". I don't wear perfume, I would not spray scents so they get into the walls. But I don't want to be constantly wondering if something has a chemical or a faint scent, like my shampoo, the owners on the other side of the wall might smell, in my own rented space. I want to feel relaxed at home. It just sounds too restrictive to feel like "home". If they have such stringent requirements I don't want them as landlords. They might be too overbearing.

Oh, here, the lingo for being allowed to smoke pot, is "420 friendly".

I passed along that nice 2 bedroom for $1100 ad to a woman who had an ad on the other rental site. I noticed she was looking for a place for herself and her son. That's who should get that place. it's really nice, and a good price.

I may look for a roommate who is also apartment hunting. Two can afford a better space than one, generally.

I think it's too much just for me. That would be hard to keep up with because there are booms and busts with contracts at my current workplace. Some months that would be way too much.

You could airbnb the other bedroom and have them pay the whole rent

A younger couple I know bought a house that was in need of repairs (it was very cheap). They 'camped' in it while holding jobs and working on repairs during the evenings and weekends. Then they sold it and started again with another house. After several rehabbed houses they were able to buy a big one that is now beautiful. They live in it, rent most of the basement to a permanent
renter plus doing airbnb in two other basement bedrooms.

Lol. Maybe that would be some kind of poetic justice.


But seriously, no. That was one of the very few owners advertising that wasn't being too greedy in this time of housing crisis. Like I said, people used to find mortgage helpers, not lucrative business opportunities. If I were to rent a two bedroom, I'd split the rent in half. And if a landlord is charging a fair price and being above board, they would want to screen the other tenant and have them sign on for half on the lease (to protect themselves and both tenants and make it all legal). If they are charging a fair and honest rent, they are likely fair and honest landlords. I respect that.

It was a really nicely renovated 2 bedroom suite in a house - which is now already gone. I hope that the woman and her son, who I passed the ad onto - or someone else who really needs an affordable 2 bedroom - were able to rent it.

Yeah, it's really cool. I've come across some really unique homes. There was one like that, but a bigger, far more expensive house that had all this cool woodwork inside. Looking at the pictures is the fun part.

I remember the days when it was all just newspaper ads and I had to pound the pavement (actually, in Vancouver my partner and I found our place that way, when there was Craigslist, because some vacancies don't bother advertising, there - you just look at the signs in front of buildings and buzz the manager). Anyway, there were some interesting and sketchy "tours/interviews". And I usually went alone! Now, you have some idea of where you're going and a sense of the owners. It's not a one way street, even despite the housing crisis. Both renter and landlord need to be careful. Caveat emptor.
