He was added by Disney and I actually rather like him. He has a bit of a "keep offa my lawn, you kids" attitude that appeals to the codger in me. They even got all meta and had gopher come right out and point out (breaking the fourth wall as they say) that he wasn't in the books.

Some story additions are better than others. Gopher was definitely a winner. Then on the other hand there was Darby.

I loathe Disney retellings of wonderful books for kids. The great thing (for me) about good books is the power to encourage imagination - the characters that I (and my kids) imagined were far more fascinating than the Disney versions.

Can't say that it's restricted to Disney. Peter Jackson and his "The Orcs Go On Forever" series that goes on...forever...comes to mind.

Lots of imaginative stuff on the 'net, unregulated by gatekeepers of any sort (so quality will vary) -- people no longer have to go to the movies to get their movie fix, or to get their reading fix go out and buy a publisher-okayed book by a publisher&editor-okayed author...

Ordinary people (like Canadians) can, with just a cellphone camera, make a film and put it up (for free) for people to see...

Pretty exciting stuff
