Overshadowed a bit by the footie this weekend is the fact that Summer McIntosh broke the 200m world record, setting a time of 2:01:65 at the Canadian swimming trials. That's on top of three world records she set in last summer's trials, tying a record for records set by Michael Phelps at the 2008 Olympics, where he won 8 gold medals. Summer now works with his former coach so comparisons between her and Phelps are going to become more common, too. Two years until the next Olympics but she does have world championships and other events before then.

And the final sweet note on this one: Her mother swam the 200m at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, which is where Summer will be swimming in two years for the 2028 games.

ANd has now withdrawn from the rest of the meet due to illness:
I saw that. Bummer. She had the year's fastest time in the 400m individual medley in the heats, an event she already holds the world record in so might have had more record races coming. Whatever she has sounds bad. Her doctors were the ones who kiboshed her swimming any further. She's made the team for the Pan Pacific anyhow.

Everthing is a monster if it is beyond nothing ... what powers expect the people to be ... nothing. Thus there wisll be no need for support of the subtleties of life ... everything can be economical and there will be no need for persons to labor, or be about working at something ...

In short no need for demos ... democtratics and all that nonsense ... just leaders down that path ... one way!

She broke a world record on Monday, and was coming down with something.

This woman is a monster!
There's a certain appropriateness in her being with Phelps' coach because I think she has the potential to be to women's swimming what he became to men's. Just so long as she focuses on her game and doesn't let things go to her head, though so far she has come across as one of the most level-headed young athletes I've seen.

So with McIntosh out, Taylor Ruck seems to be taking over as the star of the Canadian trials. Wins in three different strokes.

Ella Jansen won the 400m freestyle, the event that McIntosh was expected to win before her illness. Jansen commented about how different it is racing without Summer in the pool. She's a similar to age to Summer (20 to Summer's 19) and has been racing against McIntosh since she was 10. Shows you just how much impact an athlete of that calibre can have in their sport.
