"Hello? This is air duct cleaning services..."

Did it ever? I got the impression companies used the DNC list for their call list. Not the big companies - mostly scammers.

The problem with the DNC is the same as the problem with CASL (the new anti-spam law): both create hassles for Canadian companies while doing nothing about offshore callers/spammers.

A certain business that I used about a decade ago phones me about once a month, wanting me to invest more money in their services in hope of big returns. I keep telling them that I have no money to invest. They won't take no for an answer. Last time they called, I simply kept them on the phone agreeing with everything they said and then telling them that I had 'NO MONEY TO INVEST'. "Oh, but you don't want to pass up this opportunity." "Oh", I say in an encouraging tone. So they continue with their spile, with me murmuring 'Uh, ha', and 'sounds good' and finally 'If it is that great an opportunity, then you go ahead a put up the money for me.' "Oh, it doesn't work that way. You have to make a small commitment to show your interest." and then I repeat 'Didn't you hear me - I HAVE NO MONEY TO INVEST'. Then I hang up.
Come to think of it, I must be due for another call soon.

I live in an apartment building and I get those duct cleaning calls a least every other day. I tried several times to tell them I live in an apartment they don't listen. The last call I got I told them I live in an apartment building and I asked to speak to their supervisor they said no one was available so I said I would wait until someone was they hung up on me.

For the last couple of months we've been getting sometimes multiple calls a day from "Windows Computers" about "error messages" being sent from my computer. Sometimes I play along, sometimes I hang up right away.

Well, if their systems keep locking up and calling the same number, maybe they are powered by Microsoft after all.

When they call and tell me they've detected a virus on my Windows - I reply with a comment like, "Thanks. I'll wash them."

The "captain" calls occasionally.

The "computer guy" calls quite frequently.

The "credit card interest reducer" calls really frequently.

And a few others to boot.

I am on the DNC list - you have to renew every few years though, it helps a tiny bit.

I get the computer virus calls fairly frequently. I keep giving the caller my Computer Technicians phone number, claiming that he would KILL me if I did anything at all to alter my computer. I also get the credit card interest reduction calls. If I'm not busy enjoying myself in some way I enjoy playing with these guys. I string them along as long as possible and then ask why they really think I'd be interested in their information. I NEVER pay interest on my credit card!

For a while we were getting too many of these calls as we were eating supper. We put the phone on the table , answered it when it rang, ,held it between us and let them listen in to our conversation (often making rude comments about idiots who phone during meal times).

So the question is , why do the duct cleaners call.
No one, well, unlikely they will get a contact sale.

So, they could be finding out if you were home, but, then, they wouldn't stay on the call.
So, what could they be after?

One of my thoughts is it a place for folks to practice their English...how long can you stay on the call selling a really bad product.
The longer you can do so, the better you are.
You get promoted to true cold calls.

Except I've had people who were really good. And, if you agree and go along with it, you will be transferred to a Canadian agent. I even tried to book a cleaning once, for an empty lot across the street. Didn't happen, possibly because of a massive snowstorm.

Chansen, I can only feel a bit of sympathy for the folks who call you. Makes me laugh.

Now, my sweetheart had an Dutch Oma who was fiesty and independent. She got a call from a presumptuous fellow at Sears who wanted to come clean the carpets. Her answer?

"How dare you tell me my carpets are dirty!!?"

My hubby and I both got texts on our cell phones telling us that we have won $850,000.00 Canadian. PARTY TIME!!! WHOO HOO!!

It says "your mobile number has won CA $850,000.00 you are to contact the Claims Agent Mr. Craig Lewis for your Claims." It comes from promo 2894@gmail.com.

Perhaps I will invite all the Wondercafers2 to my party LOL!

My mom got her home phone repaired today. It had been out of order all summer long. After it was fixed, the second call she received, "Hello, this is air duct cleaning services..."

Whereupon she flung the poor innocent phone across the room and broke it again. :D (at least that's how that narrative would have ended around here).
