Hallowe'en thread: Spooky stories

Anyone got a good ghost story to tell? Especially a "real" one? Maybe something that happened to you? Or a favorite one from history or folklore?

I have, alas, never really experienced anything weird or supernatural. A favorite ghost story though (and coming out soon as a movie) is the Winchester house in San Jose, California. I first came across it in comic book form when I was a kid. Built for Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester rifle fortune, it was worked on throughout her life, ending up with 160 rooms that were built without much planning, leading to some weird things like blind staircases and such. The purpose, purportedly, was to provide protection from, and housing for, the spirits of the victims of her husband's invention. To this day, it is allegedly the scene of many hauntings.

There was a song about Molly Turgis, that Eddie Albert sang and played guitar on in an episode of Green Acres. Molly had been run out of town for being too ugly. And her ghost came back and threw things and occasionally she would steal a car and drive it some distance. She would also smash windshields in cars. The problem was solved in 1960's sitcom fashion when Eva Gabor gave Molly's ghost a makeover and now she was a beauty. She did do one last bit of mischief for the road after being made beautiful, however, as she smashed Eddie's guitar over his head.

Listened to "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman on my way back across Canada. Heartily recommend it as a "ghosts" story.

Now if you want outright horror, you want the Sandman graphic novels. He went some very, very dark places in those. And, curiously, some very light ones, too.
