Fort McMurray Fire

I remember my kids camping and thiugh the cabin was using the pit, it was an old one. A root fire started. The councillors had to grab axes and dig at the ground to cut the roots. While the kids grabbed gallons of water

Because of course tree roots grow towards warmth. So when a pit is dug, i think they dig about an 8ft diameter area free of roots. But over time the roots gravitate back and the pits have to be redug. Not sure how frequently

Last year there was a forest fire near my home. This year the ground is home to lots of prairie crocuses! Local folks will be keeping a good watch on the burn area as it will become a prime place for picking wild blueberries.

*sigh* I'm feeling a bit helpless in some ways. As long as I have a good day, I have the time and some energy to help. I hear calls of 'we need people here, show up - address'.
Showing up to an area with no clue as to the types of things they need help with sounds like a bad idea to me, especially considering my limitations. I can't be hauling flats of water as that's being handed out. Even lighter items, I could burn out rather quickly. There are jobs I likely can help with, but I want to know if there's a match before showing up and possibly being in the way.

Never be excessive ... always the mean, or medium to disturb ends ... its just polity! Some Scott impressed me with that ...

Fires here in the city today. 1 neighbourhood evacuated, with damage to three houses. Nothing like a whole city at risk, but firefighters seem to be spread thin. A good dumping of rain would be great!
It was cooler today at least, but the garden got watered multiple times. The wind really picked up and it sucked out a fair bit of moisture from my skin with the little bit I was out there.

Nice. Saw that a clothing store near Yobo's flower store is offering this deal - buy any bra and they will donate $5 to Fort McMurray.

Hmmm.......do you trust that stores will actually pass on all the donations from their customers? Do you think that some may gather them up and submit them as donations in the store name (gaining a tax advantage)?

Personally I donate by cheque and demand a tax receipt.

I trust that most of the businesses do pass on the donations. When it comes to the tax advantage though, yes. This comes too with the option for people to donate points and then the company hands over the money.

I'm finding this a little bit frustrating to deal with as right now it's so many businesses doing this. Often times it's just a bit of an automatic thing a cashier asks for donations in general, but with the higher emotional stake right now there's a bit more judgement or guilt tripping done.

Obviously, they will not be submitting them under the customer's individual names. It will go in as being from the "customers of store x" or whatever. I'm sure CRA monitors these sorts of givings to make sure they aren't being used as a tax dodge (or have blessed it as such). However, it is a common strategy now and usually only involves customers giving a dollar or two added to their bill. If it gets more money to those who need it, I'm not going to complain though I wouldn't give that way myself.

Obviously, if you are making a larger donation that is receiptable ($10 or higher, IIRC), you would not do it that way.

Business is nearly always honest ... if I wonder about it ... is this like questioning a god-like entity in some peoples perspectives?

I heard 2000 buildings were burnt down in ft. Mac. That is a relatively small number given what could have been.
It will still be weeks until residents return but they have started repairing infrastructure-water, power.
Some of the oil/gas plants that shut down are going to re-start this weekend. Glimpses of hope

The united church minister (Donna Lee) is currently in Athabasca and posting frequent musings. I like that.

A GI virus is going around Northlands. More than 100 have been sick with it at the centre, and there are many more people who aren't staying there but go for the free meals and other goods/services. Not sure if it's spread to any of them or not.

Unfortunately, a situation like this is ideal for a bug like that. Hope measures are taken to try to reign it in. The evacuees don't really need more problems right now.

They are isolating those who are sick, increased cleaning, encouraging hand washing and have sanitizer available. At least it's a fairly short duration that people tend to be sick. Not fun though especially when you can't just be in your own bed and bathroom.

So I met in person today a person who was evacuated from Ft. Mac. He was in our new MEC. He said he's curious to see if his fire safe surviced the fire. His house went up in 2 minutes. He commented that folks are being escorted through town to the northern facilities but aren't able to stop (for safety reasons). He has asked a pal to try but no luck.

I wished I had asked him what he had in the safe.
