Seeking God can mean yearning to feel the presence of God. It can also mean attempting to discern what God calls us to do and be. Here is where the moral dimension comes into play, perhaps.

The psalmist does not insist on "passionately" seeking God in this translation.

Humanists would argue that moral guidance comes from a variety of sources including from within the self.

To say that one does not seek moral guidance without seeking God is a faith statement on your part.

However if someone wished to overwhelm you with his desires ... what would mystically happen but a strong override? Not really that gentile as it incarnates! It may be a control feature of loud character ... thus read quieter matter; black physics?

Some say God is passion and others say the word ... thus some very loud words are contrived ... it rattles those dominions beyond our comprehension; sentient stuff! Really big rackets develop into business chimera ...

I was told by a businessman that there were no such things ... laid out? Od course other plots and schemes drift as not being conspired ... in a dash con spi racy! May depend on how it is spoken from the poles ... a loud pole ...

I'm afraid your reading this psalm through the lens of your UCCan church's sterile stoicism
And this is so true of not just the UCCan church but of most Religions who don't want to follow the real truth of the scripture ------they have to downplay the accepting of God first and feel they have the ability on their own to master moral guidance as paradox3 points out her comment here -----

They don't consider that their self is corrupt until they find and accept Christ who is the only one who can make the corrupt inner self ---uncorrupt -----

Seek--- in ancient Hebrew is ----

I say ----Their lens comes from their humanistic side as paradox3 points out and their Spiritual lens is veiled still----

so here we see this verse in both Psalms 14 and 53

Psalms 14:2

2 The LORD has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men To see if there are any who understand, Who seek after God.

Psalms 53:2
2 God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men To see if there is anyone who understands, Who seeks after God.

So here is the thing ----here we see that the Psalmist has God is so concerned with all the corruption and wickedness ---sinfulness that is going on on His earth that the Psalmist has God peering down from heaven to see if there is anyone wise enough to understand they need to seek God ---so God can unveil their heart and mind and restore them ---their moral compass is in need of help -----

also this word fool in 53 and 14----Hebrew word ----Nabal --senseless, especially of religious and moral insensibility------
fool,(opposed to נָדִיב noble-minded)
denying God Psalm 14:1 = Psalm 53:2

So I personally don't think that these Psalms are speaking of Atheist -----it is more speaking of people who may believe in a higher power but have rejected God's pulling on their hearts and mind to open them up to accepting and seeking Him -----as no sinner seeks God -----until they have come to the end of themselves and realize they are in need of a higher power ------God is always there waiting for us to repent and then He can open our hearts and mind to seek Him ------that is how I see it -----

If God is the word and a higher power ... then how many people believe little of the diversity thereoff as they try and make everybody like them ... as a function of avarice (rough trnaslation; a control freak)!

If observed from outside their hard circle ... how do they appear? Thus much of what was in there turns to vapours ---Fruedian theory on flamings!
Enough to chill a Kohl hard heart ... ISIS?

I have Christian aquaintences about me that swear they are Christian but hate any taxing concern that might lift those that Christianity has disadvantaged through corrupt justice systems based on off-set balances. Sometimes a thumb is to blame ... as the corruption weasels in everywhere ...

Thus essences escape as alternate unseen vapours ... abstract extractions? Maes bad ... as well as Maes Knot, cos 've kinkiness ... found in trees of wisdom based on lymphoid systems ... but we are not to speak of it for sophistication is ineffable word ... deeply pondered?
