Feb. challenge-reduce the plastic

Paper straws are a fine solution. I'd forgotten that they existed. Given that we have to have some single use 'plastic' items, seems to me that biodegradable is the way to go.
 
The fancy straws actually tend to be paper.

The problem with them is they fall apart after being in a beverage for a while. So a setup like this, where the drinks sit around a bit before served is a bad idea:

There's also a big price difference between them and basic plastic straws. I don't see other cardboard ones around.
 
ended up with 2 takeout cups and lids today. A friend had a surprise appendectomy and was craving starbucks so I bought her one, and myself one to drink with her as I visited. With advance warning I could have brought 2 cups from home but I hate coffee and didn't want that in my lidded cups. Convenience and compassion today over care for the earth......

So far it's going well here, single serving recyclable bottles at home are being used but that wasn't something I planned to change. Chemguy's diet means that he's not calling me offering to buy stuff on his way home. I did pick up some fast food for my sister's family when I spent the day with them, but that was to go, so no need to buy drinks.
 
Id on't get far thus coffee in a ceramic jar ... same ole, Sam old ... brain fungi .. or just a truffle off the tree ... with spin tuit?
 
The only straws I recall using that month besides what's mentioned above were from the trip I did with my sister - so going there near the end of Feb and on the way back it was already March. Very little eating out. Did go out for tea with a friend when in Calgary, ceramic mugs were used. It's possible there's 1 or 2 times that I'm not remembering, but it wouldn't be any higher than that.

So it's all my sister that's the bad influence. Just kidding, Chemguy's diet is the big factor and I'm surprised by just how much.

Something I wonder about is bubble tea, that's a treat that we enjoy in the summer and I'm sure Chemguy will still allow that to be factored into his diet, although the frequency will likely decrease. Reusable straws for that would be much easier to clean that what is used in most drinks. I have never seen ones to buy though, has anyone? I bet I could find on amazon (.com .ca less likely). I think straws are almost required for cold bubble tea. A spoon could be used, but it's not the same at all, I know as sometimes I get hot bubble tea where I use a spoon to prevent burning myself.
 
One of the Deacons of my church posted on fb a video against the use of single-use straws. Since viewing it, I haven't totally given up on straws, but I have used less.
 
The only time I ever use a straw is when buying pop with a meal at a fast food place. And I don't even do this very often.

At the Toronto Zoo I used to buy Harvey's for lunch once in a while.

The Zoo doesn't allow straws on the premises so it wasn't very complicated to just take the lid off my diet coke.

Alas we no longer have Harvey's at the Zoo. The generic hamburger place is just not the same.

Sorry paradox3, I feel I missed something. Are you working now at the Zoo?

I feel there are only a couple of situations in which I would absolutely desire a straw...

...when enjoying a partially-frozen treat like a Slrpee or Ice Cppcno.

...when drinking something in the dark of a cinema.

Actually, I have largely stopped doing this. As you say when discussing the zoo, I just pop the top off and sip the drink that way. If I am taking it in the car, then I will use a straw. That way I can leave the lid on to prevent spillage.
