Sports is pop culture so I think it can stay here.

The one team that never seems to come up in these discussions (that I have noticed) is the Chicago Blackhawks. Is because they are named after a person rather than a whole tribe?
 
The Buffalo Bills - had to google to get that though. I wouldn't be surprised if there are others, particularly lower level stuff.

Same division among American Indians. Duh. so lets have the scientific poll, regardless of the resentment of this idea in the Ghetto here.

One problem with this issue is the paucity of unique team names that both reflect the region and have charisma. My personal favorite is the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. In the most prestigious U.S. college football league (the SEC), 3 teams are called "the Tigers" (LSU, Missouri, and Auburn). As for Edmonton's teams, the Oil Kings meets such criteria, but the Oilers seems an uncreative ripoff of the Oil Kings. LA will soon get a new NFL team. I propose the name, the Los Angeles Glitz, a unique name that resonates with the red carpet, the Academy Awards, and Rodeo Drive that are famous in that region.
 
Yeah, but one's gotta guess there's more Bills than Black Hawks...which Bill? Buffalo Bill Cody, I guess. It almost seems an honour to name a team after an individual person. Like the various street names after famous people. And stamps.
 
There are a series of words which have been used to put down people / groups. These words have power in the hands of both the oppressed and the oppressor. The power in the hands of the oppressed is to use the word, and take it back , to use it within the community. When the oppressor uses it, it is inappropriate. When a commercial enterprise uses it, which is external to the group, then it is also part of the oppression.

Look at the words use to describe people who are African - American. The wors to describe aboriginal people around the world. Women...

Some words, do their history, can only be used by those who have been victimized by them.

I'll plead my general dislike of American football (Canadian variant included ) as the reason for my failure to think of the Bills.:cool:

Willful bulls, buffalo running rampant ... like some people I know when they loose it ... people are not adequately curious about word as a subtle god ... a wee dark attribute as metaphor?

The things we are directed not to know ... for if we knew the Bacchus caused by some elite baccalaureates ... we be embarrassed by our lighter kinds with excessively light fingers ... scissor fingers????????? Cut per se as a thief in the shadows if you can't see it?

Well we accepted the nick name of naïveté as positive ... right'o us?

Yep. It is Cody. It is a bit of a play on his famous nickname.

I was thinking this morning.

Edmonton Eggs.

It could draw a bit more attention to the Pysanka in Vegreville. In fact the Vegreville Pysanka could lend the team a new colour scheme and logo.

Or, not.

The team uniform could remain largely untouched. I mean the yellow helmet with green ovoid could be tweaked ever so slightly so that it took more of an egg shape. You wouldn't need to replace the EE inside the oviod.

It immediately puts all existing merchandise into the collectible category.

You always need to order new merch so changing the uniform a little or a lot is no real obstacle (Geez the Vancouver Canucks have made a hobby out of it). And anyone notice that the new look Winnepeg Jets changed the uniform and still managed to sell enough tickets to make that franchise fiscally successful.

The CFL has also shown in Ottawa that the fan base does not depend on the name of the on field product. Rough Riders, Renegade, Red Blacks are not as important, apparently as is the colour scheme.

Heck, my beloved Ti-Cats got rid of Ivor Wynne and replaced it with Tim Horton's field.

The only real resistance is among those who hate for things to change.

No, I hadn't heard of it before.

Calling someone homophobic would be along the same lines as calling someone racist or sexist. I suppose there are times and places for it to be done, but I'd suggest exercising caution.

I agree with this. If the only person who can call someone on being racist/sexist/homophobic is that person, you'd probably be waiting a long time for some people BUT these words are also badly overused at times. They should not be used casually as insults, but consciously to name an attitude or action that is harmful.

That said, "homophobic" is a bad term, IMHO. It implies some kind of psychological "fear" of gays rather than hatred. Fear may play into the hatred for some, but it is the hatred that we are naming as harmful. "Homosexist" or something would be better but I suspect that horse has left the barn.
