Decluttering

Ok folks, question for you.

I was given precious moments figurines by my son's for many birthdays. I have them in a curio cabinet. Over the years a few have been broken.

What have you done with collections you don't really desire any more to be out daily. I've thought about switching it up, so that they are out for spring Easter, then pack away.

Thoughts?

Rotating figurines or bringing them out seasonally is a good idea if you enjoy such an activity.

If not, I would say downsize the collection to the point you can arrange it nicely in the available space.

If you no longer like the figurines at all, there is not much sense keeping them in boxes. They sell for very little these days so donation is the way to go IMO.

When I clean the fridge I usually put together a robust soup. My husband keeps buying steak which I’m not keen on. I think one will end up in a stew As we dig down in the freezer.
Yummmm - steak and kidney pudding, , steak and kidney/mushroom/onion/whatever pie. Delicious beef stew - with veggies - and/or dumplings.

memories of the smell of steak/kidney pie, and my mom's hate of them have forever coloured me against these pies.

A daughter took my wee figurines, they apparently have some value if she wants to sell them - but she doesn't, and I didn't. . A grandson took my dad's small collection of Toby Jugs of n0 real value.

It's so nice to hear about family members wanting some of these keepsakes.

Over Christmas I learned that my husband did a little declutterring of something I planned to use— an air fryer that my son gave us when he got a new one. Because w3 stored it in the basement, I didn’t bring it up to use often. While preparing for a crowd, I said…I’ll go get the air fryer to cook the appetizers. He got a funny look on his face and then told me he had thrown it out! It was perfectly good too. It became a bit of a family joke over the holidays but I’m still a little miffed…we have decorative wedding gifts we’ll never use…He could have thrown those out!

I have dealt with all of that emotional stuff in my own life, I think. But where is the damned cat carrier that I insisted we keep?

Our space is cluttered with my partner's 'stuff'. I have claimed areas that are MINE, areas that are SHARED that I feel free to move his 'stuff' out of. The rest of the house/garage/yard seem to be his. The kids and I seem to have accepted that this won't get resolved until he dies!

I realized something similar with my spouse.

Most of our storages are boxes that came from our previous home's attic

The decluttering gurus are always advising people to declutter before moving. But moving can be stressful and it seems to involve more work than expected in most cases.

Decision fatigue must be a factor.

Oh, we did tons! The attic was not in my domain.

I got tired of reminding, requesting, nagging. Realised that I really didn't need the space he was taking up with his messes.. An advantage showed up with my total disinterest with how he was going to sort his basement mess enough to sleep a daughter and two young men in addition to himself. When he asked what i wanted him to do with a particular item I didn't even feel guilty about saying that I would have given it away about twenty years ago.

Decided to declutter my desk (in part due to the chaos being anxiety causing).
Found stuff to go to recycling:
a whole bunch of power cords, some for computers we no longer have
a 10year old dlink router (obsolete)
software that is no longer used
way too many old ear buds from phones

Found things to still hold onto
various power cords

Found something that I had recently given up on finding
keyboard for tv. for some reason, it had ended up on my desk. I had finally given up and ordered one yesterday, as like it for the tv in the office. Guess we will have one for upstairs too! with it, i bothered to key in credentials for multiple streaming apps to the office tv. woot!

Things to go to other places
kids toys to kids room
books to thrift store

relocated/cleaned up
binders for financials
textbooks / security guides

fixed
pencil tray in desk

If I found some of those items on my desk I would move them to my guy's desk. I don' t know one cord from another. His old cd's, discs etc. are of no interest or use to me. The y are his responsibility.

Well done.
