Caring Corrupted

Horribly sad stuff below. Warning.

I am paraphrasing all of this. I don’t really want to transcribe it. In the Special Joint Committee (parliamentary) on MA!D (you can google it) today the pro infanticide/ paediatric euthenasia Dr from the Netherlands explained that eligible teenagers 16 yrs old can ask for MAiD. If they are as young as 14 and the parents disagree they will default to the child’s wishes, and in the coming year he expects that this same policy will extend to minors aged 1-12.(I imagine he meant to say 13…these policies are headed our way) An experienced disability advocate spoke of losing the Bill C-7 fight for disabled adults who are not dying, and now children are being thrown into the bonfire (her words). She spoke of expansions putting indigenous children at risk. An indigenous leader from the disability community spoke of how Nov is Indigenous Disability awareness month and here we are before parliament talking about killing indigenous youth. And there was talk about the implications of the mental health extension now that at risk kids are going to be involved and how there has been no consultation with disabled youth themselves as they proceed with this. An “ethicist” talked about how the right thing to do doesn’t necessarily feel good ( a statement which the disability community finds quite suspect) and about how the ethical decision making process for a 90 yr old with a health condition should be no different from that of a youth. And I haven’t even caught up yet about what was discussed about infants.

This is happening folks. The thing about going down a slippery slope is speed accelerates before you know it.

I’m going to cry now.

That's actually just it, Kimmio. Most instances of "incompatible with life" are, these days, caught by regular ultrasounds. And are usually solved by a therapeutic abortion. There's a sad story circulating FB of a woman from Texas, whose gynecologist caught the multiple problems fairly early (and they were awful ones, compounding each other, including no kidneys), and told her that her child was basically dying in the womb. Even so, abortion is illegal in Texas at present, so it cost her time and money and travel, and extra time pregnant with a dying fetus and insurance nightmares, to get an abortion out of state.
Yeah. I don’t want to debate you. It’s not worth it. We’re not talking about abortion. The real disability rights/ human rights community comes from the left and they are not antiabortion. The far right were the ones that co-opted and convoluted it, to alienate the centre/ neoliberal “progressives” from supporting us. You were used to push this euthanasia agenda. The far right used the affluent/ middle class “centre progressives” to do their bidding - whether it was appealing to an ableist view of “compassion” to compel them covertly, or convoluting it with abortion overtly to repel them - they manipulated the narrative. I tried to tell everyone that. If the far right gets in, they already have us where they want us and they won’t change a thing to help anyone on the margins - it’ll be worse, and too late to do anything about.

Kimmio, I'm agreeing with you. Please try and see that. I, too, think that the Quebec physicians proposing this are on the slippery slope you describe. Modern medicine makes it pretty hard to avoid knowing if a fetus is viable, unlike earlier times when fetuses often died in utero because ultrasounds didn't exist.

Indigenous youth suicide is its own quiet pandemic. Doesn't require mental illness or disability. Just colonizers, and a horrible history of trauma. I don't think it's terribly helpful to jam the two problems together.

No but they are jamming them together. Someone pro euthenasia lobby in an earlier session or article I read hinted at discrimination if MAiD wasn’t available to Indigenous people.

And they are related subjects because they are both examples of groups being unofficially declared outside of the norm by dominant groups.
Calling it discrimination to be concerned about the suicides of marginalized and disabled people is how the MAID proponents are flipping the script on disability rights. Death has become a priority right over the right to live, in this country, and it is disgusting.

I'm talking about abortion because one reason that the Quebec physicians don't have a leg to stand on is that most "incompatible with life" fetuses are now diagnosed via ultrasound and aborted.

Okay but it’s not going to court. They’re moving it along through parliamentary process and nobody is putting the availability of abortion out there as a defence. Given what’s going on south of us, on that front - it would not be wise to argue that as a defence. We need to stick to arguing that the whole thing is against human rights - the subverting of disabled peoples’ human rights in the first place was against human rights. We are people who don’t need to justify living and that’s what everyone needs to know first and foremost. I would direct people to the strongly worded letter put out by the UN high commissioner in Feb last year that our PM has not responded to, as a defence.

Disability rights have been trampled, we don’t need to bring abortion into it. The religious right did that to us, convoluted the two - we don’t need to do it too, from the opposite direction. That’s a trap that won’t help women or disabled people (which also includes women).

Although there are birth injuries too.

And DaisyJane's late son was another, on the much more disabled end of the spectrum, and he was loved and cherished and carefully cared for all of his life. But the extent of his care was made possible by a lawsuit won by the family.

The manifestation of birth injuries is often not apparent for months. Years. I didn’t know I had ADHD until my late 40’s. It could’ve been part of the birth injury. If I didn’t have CP then that disability wouldn’t be visible - MAiD puts neurodiverse kids and adults. at risk too. (“But hey! Disabled at any stage of life, MAiD’s got you covered!” /s)

Besides you’re wading into very dangerous territory because there are plenty of instances where children regardless of disability are neglected whose parents can afford to care for them but don’t, children who are in abusive homes regardless of income, and situations where parents do care and are loving and committed to their whole lives but can’t afford basic things for them - and everything in between over a span of a lifetime - and the solution is not to kill them. It shouldn’t be the solution if they’re disabled any more than if they are not. Think about the far reaching implications. It is also against international human rights as per the UN.

What people are saying if they argue for infanticide is disabled children are less worthy of keeping alive, less ‘human’, as they try to make excuses why it might be okay to kill them with MAiD. Its affirming that society only wants perfect “unflawed” kids and later adults. It’s like if we disabled show up, we’re the rotten apples to be tossed out because we’re unusable or a disease. It’s monstrous, where we’re headed again. Very nazi. And once the precedent is set for disabled kids and adults what makes you think that’s the only protected human rights category they’ll stop at? Already, disability has been used as a catch all net - they know damn well - they knew the stats going in - incidences are higher in poor non white communities.

Oh by the way I’m not a birth injury. I’m a human being who experienced a birth injury. Nobody caught that.

I saw it. That's how you self-described yourself. I assumed that, in the same way that disabled people can use Crip (where I would not) and gay guys can use "fag", you had the privilege of being in the identified group.

Personally I am a diabetic. Some would like to call me a person living with diabetes.
I am also an insulin user. Not a peron who became insulin requiring.

I guess the point is we can decide these things for ourselves

Daisy Jane still did an enormous amount of work and advocacy on her son's behalf. Certainly the settlement facilitated a LOT for him though.

She's nothing short of amazing.(y)

And, yeah, I am quite happy to call myself diabetic. Never refer to myself as a metformin user, though, because it doesn't really fit well in casual conversation. Usually say something like, "I take metformin."
