I am a third generation Albertan, grew up in Calgary, and started teaching in 1971 in Northern Alberta. My BSc degree i in biochemistry with a math miinor and my BEdA was in Elementary Science. I havve enough Classics courses between the two degrees for a minor in Classics and enough Biology courses for a mnor in Biiology.. My teaching experience included seven years teaching high school math and science and other courses in an Indigenous Residential School outside of St. Paul, Alberta run by an Indigenous council with representatives from seven reserves. I also taught adult upgrading in Northern Alberta for several years with most of my students being Cree and Metis with a few Chipewyan and Dene students. I entered seminary in 1986 at AST with summer internships in Ville St. Laurent next to Montreal and Ponoka, Alberta, and was settled in Hudson Bay, SK in 1989. I served 3 past\oral charges as a settled or called minister and seven pstoral charges as appointed or interim minister in Saskatchewan and Alberta. I also worked for 2 1/2 years in management of out of school child care programs including managing a program in a boys school, managing our largest site with 70 children, and doing a mix ofa floating manager and part of the STEAM Team providing special programming in science, technology, eningineering, art, and mathemaics, usaully with activities that combine more than one of those areas. From 2019 to 2021, I moved to Ontario to do interim minstry for Deep River Community Church.
I volunteered over the years in many different roles with community and other organizations. I have a keen interest in developments in science, economics, politics, and the environment. I designed a dream house we were going to live in for ever, but only lived in for two years and we did a lot of the easier work on the house including shingling, insulateing, siding, soffits and fascia, and painting. We also cleared the space for the house on a totally treed lot and built part of the deck. I have laid hardwood floors, helped build our garage did mechanical work on my old truck at the time, a the simple electrical work, and a variety of other hands on activities.
One of my passions is renovating the church, shifting it from keeping the status quo to adapting to changing needs and society. The core of my theology is that there is a Mystery at the heart of creation which seems to engage at least some people like myself in a personal way, that our engagement with that mystery can take many different forms with following Jesus being the way for me to go.
One of the barriers for some people to engaging in faith communities is feeling too naive or confused by the messages they get to risk engagement. This short guide I am creating is to provide a safe way for those and other people to find the beginning to some answers to questions they might have. I aimed to make most of it in language that is fairly normal and trying to present unusual terms and concepts in ways that are easier to grasp. The book starts with science stuff as I like to ground myself in realtiy with the physical world as being a place to test the validity of wome of what we believe and many people do not not what reality iis.
