It seemed to me that some people were giving @ChemGal a bit of a hard time over her supporting Mr. Harper.

Personally, I don't play party politics. I'm voting for Borys Weshneshkooshkakee
 
I don't know if Trudeau has specified Seniors in his promise to reverse income splitting.

In principle he seems to be against the notion arguing that the increased contribution limit on Tax Free Savings Accounts and Income Splitting only benefits the to 15% of Canadian taxpayers.

That's what democracy's about. He - at least his party - has big support in Alberta. Has for decades. It's a conservative place still - even with the provincial NDP in, it looks like (groundbreaking as that was). So, while many in the rest of the country are thinking otherwise right now, it's probably more common to hear support for Harper, there. I suspect I'd find that to be the case with several relatives there (politics is a subject I tend to avoid with them). Whereas here, everyone (except for my Alberta bread dad) I know is supporting either NDP or Greens here.

Alberta is probably where the bulk of his support comes from. It's always been a conservative stronghold.
 
It is going to be the longest Federal Election since the late 1800's.

Pundits will be going out of their minds trying to find today who will be elected in about a month's time.

And there is plenty of time for any and every political leader to seriously put their foot in their mouth.

It will be interesting to see if this strategy pays dividends for the Conservative party or not.
 
The challenge with the polls is they are by the popular vote

Does anyone have a link which shows the polls combined with the ridings?
 
The Liberal Platform simply says that it's getting rid of income splitting, "as it helps the wealthy". I think someone would have to dig deeper to figure out what this might mean for seniors.

They state they are not getting rid of it for seniors.
 
I'm not a big Harper supporter. In terms of things that directly affected me though, I have gotten a positive benefit from changes under him. I can't think of anything that occurred under a previous prime minister while I was an adult that had such a direct effect for me.

I'm not voting for Harper, I will be voting for a local candidate and I'm not certain who that will be yet, last I looked there were only 2. When I thought my riding was different, I had someone I really supported, now I do not have that.

The issue I personally see is the ABC mentality. The Green Party and May herself have beliefs/policies that I find much scarier than the Conservatives/Harper. Harper isn't anti-science, although I agree some changes were. When someone puts silly nonsense before science, I consider that to be much more anti-science than Harper. Banning GMOs was in May's platform previously - that would have such a huge, negative major impact on so many things. I don't understand how someone can have such an anti opinion of something that they don't even understand. Don't push to ban something when you don't understand everything that you're including in that ban.

It also helps the non-wealthy. I don't understand the backlash behind it, maybe it's worth it's own topic.

It really doesn't though. Many people will not benefit at all because both partners are already in the same tax bracket. Or their income is low enough that they only pay marginal taxes anyway. The best benefit is in a one-income family where the single income is in one of the higher tax brackets. (Which actually means there are a number of folks in GP that are likely to benefit). Single parents get zilch, lowi-ncome earners get little or no benefit.

Mind you part of the reason for it was to support single income families because that is a social construct much of the CPC base thinks is/should be normative.

Chemgal, not sure if you know about MP Gary Goodyear. He happens to the member from my riding. (ugh).
He was appointed as Minister of science and technology by Harper & his fleet.
He is a creationist.

I remember that, I didn't realize he still held the position. I agree he should have never been given the position and the fact that he was, was fairly anti-science. May still scares me more than Harper.
 
Would income splitting for really wealthy seniors be a fair way of assisting the system to tax those avoiding taxes when they don't have the need to?

Does the tax system benefit those on the high end? Consider that many wealthy people don't pay much tax ... including a lot of CEO's, Bureaucrats, etc that use tax wright off's.

Then of course ... do poor people know the elevated system of law? It is slick ... perhaps ermine with dark spots ...
