And they're off...the election thread

Says you!

Let's compare Cousin.

What does BC offer? Weed, snowboarding, wine, a nude beach, Starbucks galore, hash, deforestation protests.

What does Ontario offer? The center of the universe, control over who wins the federal election (don't kid yourself that it's BC this time), amazing scenery and things to do, professional teams in all the major sports (hockey, baseball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, football).

'Nuff said.

Pass down some more weed, eh. :D

Sure. I don't think we've ever had an ice storm here! :) Or a tornado!

And you have to check out BC's Long Beach (Carolla's in that area now) for nature.

So come visit and go back to your Ontario. :)

Correction, though. Vancouver gets rain rain rain x20 because of where it's situated by mountains. Not necessarily everywhere. But we have lovely mountains to look at (on a clear day).

Ontario's the most important city in Canada, and Toronto's the best city in the world - bar none.
Sorry - but the last I heard Ontario wasn't a city. But that was probably a brain-fart.
To say one part of a country is more important than another is similar to saying one member of a family is more important than another - the oldest child more important than the younger ones, the girl more important than the boy, the maternal grandparent more important than the paternal one - or to use a Biblical image to say that one body part is more important than another, the hand more important than the foot.
As far as I'm concerned I live in Canada, I've travelled it from the east coast (NL) to the west (Vancouver Island) and dreamed of visiting the far north. I have no desire to see it broken up into five or six (or more) small parts which is what I think would happen if any one province decided to separate.

re separation referendum - the movement in Quebec looks quite dead. So I think it most likely will not happen. If it were held, and if the vote were 50% plus one, nobody of any party could hold on to Quebec. It would cause a civil war which would be worse than letting Quebec separate. Any politician who says he wouldn't let Quebec separate is either a fool or a liar. Think hard. Imagine a Harper telling Quebec after such a vote that he would not allow it to separate.

I say that out of no sympathy for separation. I spent twenty years of my life on the board of Alliance Quebec, the major anglo group against separation - some four of those years as provincial chairman.
I'm quite sure separatism is dead and isn't coming back. But I'm also sure that if it voted 50% plus one, Canada would not be able to stop the separation.

Harper is anti-democratic, an egomaniac, a control freak. and a complete sell-out to big money. Justin Trudeau is nothing more than a nice-looking spoiled kid. And he never will be more than that. Mulcair has more brains than both of them put together. In addition, Conservative party has been made a party of robots and stooges. And the Liberal party is effectively dead meat. It has to be entirely redesigned.

As for blaming the NDP of years ago in Ontario, if was not the NDP that caused the economic decline which that crisis was. We have had many, many such crises, almost all of them under Liberal and Conservative governments.

The NDP, by the way, is also the only party that has its roots in Christian teaching. Both Liberals and the Conservatives were founded as tools for big business - the Liberals for big business in Toronto, the Conservatives for big business in Montreal. And both have been knee-deep in corruption since 1867.

I like that term need-eph ... suggests leadership from adepts! Is that suggestive of things for the Shadows that knoe ...

Brain pharts ... stinkers in the PEWs ... considering the smell of rotten brains ... can cause a sensation that are clear of thoughts ...

Last Pointe - I detest the idea of separation as much as you do. And I detest the racism that lies behind much of it. But I learned the hard way that anglo Quebec would not defend its rights. It was easier just to move away.
Now, it you're not willing to recognize 50% plus 1, what are you going to do about it? The Canadian military is not up to the job even at its present size. And if Quebec were to separate, much of the army we do have would desert to join it.

The parties who bluster about saving Canada have never said how they would do it.

Nor would it matter much. We are both colonies of the U.S. That's why we have been fighting American wars just as we used to fight British wars.

Ontario is a wonderful province for people who feel comfortable with blandness. I've always found Toronto dirty and depressing.

Well Graham it isnt me who says 50% isnt enough. Its the supreme court

Toronto is a fabulous city. Alive. Vibrant. Sorry you find it bland. i find it amazing. Traffic is a pain but with millions living in and near it is just one of those issues

Only Subway?

We have a ton of Subway's here in Brantford. If you like sandwiches they are a good deal.

How is it different? Both travel underground (thus 'sub'way). Both provide mass transit. You present your ticket, go down stairs or escalator, stand on the platform, when your train arrives the doors slide open, you step on and find a seat or standing room. You wait while travelling through undergroundd tunnels, and stop at lighted stations as people get off or on. Eventually your stop comes along. You exit, go up to the surface either near your destination or near a connecting bus where you present your transfer and continue your journey.

Yes, those similarities are in place. It is not I who first defined them as different Seeler. The information was passed on to me that they're different during a guided educational tour of Montreal that I once had the pleasure of engaging in. The tour was led by a tourism expert from Montreal. They knew their own city.

My goodness - how we can get off-topic. According to Google Subway, Undergound, Metro, and several others are all terms for the same thing - a light weight rapid transit system that runs by electricity, all or partly under-ground level in urban areas. In either city I would have no trouble understanding if someone said "Let's take the subway," or "Let's take the metro" or even (especially if they had a British accent) "Let'ss take the underground."

Okay Seeler, I stand corrected. Toronto doesn't have the only subway in Canada - although we do have the best.
