Friedman & Siddiqui: ‘This is our jihad’

MIGUEL MEDINA/AFP/Getty ImagesThe partnership between Christians, Jews and Muslims in building institutions dedicated to combating intolerance is how we do battle with the evildoers who are corrupting God’s message.

According to the Qur’an — which states, “Obey not the unbelievers and hypocrites, and strive against them a mighty jihad” — every Muslim is obligated to engage in jihad, or holy war. But what exactly does that entail? For ISIL and al-Qaeda, it very literally means taking up arms and waging war against those who do not believe in Islam. For most Muslims, however, it has almost the opposite meaning.

During the Second World War, Nazi Germany murdered six-million Jews and millions of other minorities they considered to be “inferior.” Hitler’s plan for world domination was twofold: expand the Third Reich’s borders and cleanse the new territory of its Jews and other undesirables. In most cases, the conquered countries readily acquiesced to Nazi demands to hand over their Jewish citizens for extermination.

As Jewish refugees began to disperse all over Europe, Albanians welcomed them with open arms

There were very few exceptions. The most notable one, however, was Albania, the only European country with a Muslim majority. Albania was a small country with a population of just over 800,000 prior to the war, which was home to a mere 200 Jews. When Hitler demanded lists of Jewish Albanians, not only did the government refuse to comply, but various governmental agencies worked to process fake identification papers to protect the Jewish population.

As Jewish refugees began to disperse all over Europe, Albanians welcomed them with open arms, competing with one another for the honour of feeding, clothing and housing the refugees. By the end of the war, the Jewish population had increased tenfold to nearly 2,000.

What motivated Albanians to risk their lives and endanger their own families to save Jews? The answer lies in a directive issued by Prime Minister Mehdi Frasheri: “All Jewish children will sleep with your children, all will eat the same food, all will live as one family.” Albanians held the deep-seated belief that despite our religious, cultural and ethnic differences, we are all one family of humankind. And the vast majority of good people of the human race must be prepared to stick their necks out for those persecuted by the tiny minority of evil human beings.

In 2011, the Canadian Parliament voted unanimously to establish a National Holocaust Monument in the capital. The purpose of the monument is to remember the victims of the Holocaust, acknowledge the contributions survivors have made to this country and demonstrate Canada’s eternal commitment to stand at the forefront of the battle against intolerance, prejudice and genocide around the world. Funding for the monument has been shared by the people of Canada and private donors. It promises to be a source of pride for our country, not only in its message, but in its awe-inspiring and memorable aesthetics, having been designed by one of the leading architectural design teams in the world, headed by Daniel Libeskind.

Why are Muslims donating to a monument that remembers Jews who were murdered by Nazis of Christian origin? Because we are all one family

On Nov. 30, history was made when the Coalition of Progressive Canadian Muslim Organizations presented a donation collected by its member groups to the National Holocaust Monument Development Council. Why are Muslims donating to a monument that remembers Jews who were murdered by Nazis of Christian origin? Because we are all one family. Those who perpetrate crimes against humanity in the name of God are an evil minority. The vast majority of Muslims, Christians, Jews and people of all faiths are united in the belief that we are all God’s children and that each of our religions preaches love and tolerance for all peoples.

We are very blessed to live in Canada, a country that embodies these values. The National Holocaust Monument is a tangible testament to what we, as Canadians, stand for. We will forever be united and fearless as we stand up to the terrorists who wish to pervert the word of God. The Coalition of Progressive Canadian Muslim Organizations believes wholeheartedly in this important project. We look forward to taking our children and grandchildren to the monument to learn and appreciate our values. And we believe that a visit to the monument should be an integral part of the initiation process of all new immigrants to Canada. They need to see what it means to be Canadian.

Every Muslim is required to engage in jihad. This is our jihad. The partnership between Christians, Jews and Muslims in building institutions dedicated to combating intolerance is how we do battle with the tiny minority of evildoers who are corrupting God’s call to humankind. We pray that we will see the day when all peoples of the world can live together as brothers and sisters in peace and security.

To expand a bit on @crazyheart's succinct (and correct) answer, cooperation on common causes is the closest we are likely to see. Unity of all religions is simply a pipe dream. Both the paths and the destinations are too different for that. A UU type of vision, where followers on many different paths nonetheless respect each other and seek common cause where they can is more likely.

A multipath spectre? Is there a ghost of a chance on intelligence on this matter giving our bent towards emotional outbursts?

Besides what best separates the persona from senses than fear and anger ... terrorism? OSH -ite ...

My dream? That religion of all sorts be superseded into Marshall Rosenberg;s principles of Non-violent Communication. Don't think it's going to happen, but maybe that's what the New Jerusalem really looks like.

What a boring world, where everyone would think and believe exactly as everyone else. What I would hope for is not a unity of all religions, but a willingness to accept differences and work peacefully toward common goals without claiming the right to oppress/persecute/kill each other for those points on which we disagree. Current hysteria to the contrary I think we are moving toward that goal. In fact, I'd argue that the increasing violence of extremists of all religions (have we noted anywhere that extremist Hindus in India have begun to murder those who eat beef?) is a sign that we're moving toward that goal. As we learn to respect and co-operate with each other, those who want no part of respect or co-operation become increasingly desperate and, therefore, often increasingly violent. That is a sign of weakness rather than strength.

Should we stir dead souls with spirited anonymous ... dialogue , or useless commentary about that essence called ethereal?

Some say such myths do not really exist ... thence ether pops us ... usually as a aspiring point in the human brain and causing that sucking sound ... alas you can't tell a bone head really into mortal stuff anything ... the rest is just haut culture ... as Eire ...

About the recent thread, All MEDIA, heads up ... !

Now that I have succeeded--at least I think and hope that I have--in deleting a badly constructed introduction to this great topic, let us now think of it simply as our Golden Opportunity to really listen to the Delightful words of traditional Christmas carols like, JOY TO THE WORLD.

Let words like, "tidings of comfort and joy", speak to us of the kind of future that can be ours when we allow ourselves to be guided by 'god' as Generator, Organizer & Deliverer--the imminent and transcendent Holy Spirit in which we are free to live, move and have our being.

Also, in this Spirit we can get the freedom to eschew evil, or to choose the good, to imagine, to envision, create and eventually make real--the reality of GOOD on EARTH.

SOMATIC DISEASES

Generally speaking, a somatic disease is one that brings obvious discomfort to the whole body, or soma, especially the major organs, like the skin, the brain, the heart, arteries, veins, lungs, stomach, colon, bladder, kidneys, etc., including physical organs, that make up the body. But keep in mind--pardon the pun--that severe physical blows to the head can trigger conditions that mimic mental illnesses. Some are called psycho-somatic symptoms.

PSYCHO-SOMATIC DISEASES--very real and need to be taken seriously.
Lack of nutritious foods an important factor. And don't forget how essential clean water is. Extreme thirst caused by lack of water can mimic mental diseases. We can get details here:
http://www.currentpsychiatry.com/ho...-causes/338b065272077a1bd7cfe64692fe8336.html

PNEUMA-PSYCHO-SOMATIC DISEASES--ones (serious addictions, for example) we knowingly bring on ourselves,
and inflict on family and community

We must not fear to tell the media, often, how we feel about life as we experience it. Let us be thankful: Be thankful we are mostly FREE to confidently approach our social leaders and the media, in all its forms, especially the social media and invite them to work with us--that is all of us who choose to be gracious, merciful, peace-loving people with hearts that are filled with GOOD WILL and GOOD NEWS--not just the mostly-bad NEWS we hear daily.

We especially need to hear the telling of the stories of the good people who live and do the good they know in their daily lives--be they religious, moral and ethical, or secular Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jews, & whoever--all who agree to communicate with a be part of THE FAMILY OF HUMANITY!

Would communication be to rational for those that prefer the irrational bent? Some people like the hum (AUM) of it but don't like the words ...

My dream? That religion of all sorts be superseded into Marshall Rosenberg's principles of Non-violent Communication. Don't think it's going to happen, but maybe that's what the New Jerusalem really looks like.
Thanks Bette TRed.

"Non-violent Communication"? Hmmm, sounds like a good idea, BTR .... Also sounds like--unless I, meanwhile, get the job of being GOD (the supreme democrat) and surrounded by "democratic archangels, all from W Cafe 2" :ROFLMAO: -- the  goal that I have in mind. The one goal I don't have in mind is that of GOD (the supreme theocrat)! AGAPE  to one and all!

No. Religion is a cultural phenomenon. I think there is no "right religion" (there are some very bad interpretations). But I think someday there will be cooperation among religions, and all people of goodwill, in the "right spirit". That is to say, one of peace and cooperation. I hope, even in the fairly near future - and ecumenical and interfaith dialogue is important - intentionally finding common ground that brings people together for good purpose. The divisiveness of religion can, and will, I believe, eventually give way to unity - to goodwill among people.

In order for that to happen, Kimmio, I think that, at minimum, all cultures would have to agree on the equal rights of women to men (to refer only to the cis-gendered, for simplicity). And I think that might still be a long way off despite considerable movement in my lifetime. The United States of America never managed to pass the Equal Rights Amendment; Saudi Arabia does not even allow women to drive.

At their heart, aren't all major religions basically the same? Not really. From experience I can assure you that this question irritates specialists in comparative religion. The search for common denominators warps the uniqueness of several traditions. It is better to study how each tradition has a unique spirituality.

I think more progressive sects/ denominations of all religions do that, and they can counter the more intolerant or or extreme views that won't allow progress toward greater equality. And even within Catholicism, challenge old patriarchal laws, or members determine for themselves that "the old doctrine may say this but my conscience says something else". Saudi Arabia is a harsh theocracy - and women have taken huge risks to defy those driving laws. But there are Muslim feminists just as there are Christian feminists. I think patriarchal theocracies have a long way to go and I am very glad I don't live in one. But in democracies I think it's more a case of the ol' boys club political establishment, than it is about religion...but, here, it's 2015 (for a few more weeks before it's 2016)!

When one gets too close to the evil of covering up part of the dialogue ... something of the eternal conversation is disconnected ... dissociative mentality? There is an icon that this will continue at a later time after personalities get the love of hating the other out of their mind ... like that kid next door appeared at about 13 ... something changed ... was it subjective or objective overview?

How did that ugly kid get to be such a lam ... on the go none the less ... is that like a dark arched angel with proper bends?

A picture is worth a thousand words, and that photo does not have even one woman in it. I think, until the world's major male centric monotheistic religions can genuinely regard and treat women as absolute equals, then there is no real possibility for them to truly unite.

Whoa man is the dark shadow in the background and all around ... support for her patriarch ... as something to pine Hur's elf down to as an ode from a tree ...

Ode; a misunderstood thing about uprights. spruces and ET IHCs ... thus the book on Dark Spruce ... or would you rather be a monkey ... hanging from as tar? Right out of the dark Ness!

There is an African tale

An old woman with three daughters finally gets tired of them pulling their hair and getting in the turnip patch and generally being combatting ne-er do wells.

"DAUGHTERS! COME!!!"

Begrudgingly, they came.

"Yes. Yes. Yes." in a trinity.

"I want you to try to break these sticks." Their mother showed them the bundle of sticks on the floor.

The first daughter, who was fast as a gazelle, took the bundle and wrenched with all her might. And got a few slivers. And snickers from the other two. But they wouldn't yield.

The second sister, who was as agile as a marmoset, hefted the bundle and bent and bent and bent. But the bundle didn't break.

The third daughter, who was as smart as the Sun & the Moon, took the bundle, looked at her sisters & mother, and smiled and took a stick out and easily broke it. And then did so with each one in turn.

The mother smiled. "Now go with that understanding and stop fighting so much. It gives me such a headache."

(There are so many vastly different behaviours that, unfortunately, we as a species say 'this is religion' -- in fact, we ARE, in some respects, united -- by such things as our common heritage (the Out of Africa theory of human origins), by our common elemental makeup (we all came from dead stars etc), by various human universals, even by the deep morality of money...)

How can humanity unite?

Under something similar to "We the people..."?

Inalienable rights...which means that the gov't doesn't give them or make them...

And this is a big problem, because not all states are this way...there is still a lot of statism & other authoritarianisms that are accepted as normal...

Which will mean that 'We the people' will necessarily need to focus on the basic unit of society, the individual (which will, alas, be against sombunall states etc)...from there everything else follows...and which will mean that not all styles of governance will be alright...some ideas are actually wrong...I have hope; humanity, after failing at everything else, eventually hits upon the 'right' thing...and so it goes...this ellipses brought to you by the colour durple and Mammon Unicorporated
