12 killed in shooting at French satirical magazine

I'm afraid that what we're watching in Ukraine is the unfolding of the old story. Obama has made no attempt at discussion.

Right now there are discussions going on in Berlin between representatives of the Russian and Ukranian governments, hosted by the German government. Angela Merkel and Germany are very much in favour of a negotiated, peaceful resolution to this conflict. Europe doesn't wants another Iron Curtain. Neither do they want a cold or hot war.

And that is really, to my mind, where the solution needs to lie. The US should get their nose out of it and let the Europeans, who are closer to the scene and really have more of an interest in dealing with the situation, handle it.

The changes happening are very big, indeed. For a good five centuries, European empires ruled the world - getting rich by making millions starve, destroying societies, creating chaos, confusion - almost none of which made it into our history books. Japan responded by imitating the west - and in remarkably short time it destroyed the Russian fleet. The West could be beaten, and other countries worked toward throwing off western rule. The Muslims were very slow to react., especially the arabs. Though killed, looted, etc. since the early 1800s, they did not begin serious opposition to the West until well after World War 2.

But the world is rapidly changing. After World War 2, Asians kicked western europe out. When the US tried to replace the Europeans with itself, the US got kicked out.And now that the US seeks to replace the Europeans in the Middle east, it is running into serious opposition.

Few of our history books have ever seen it this way. We were always doing good - and the other sides were, and are, always evil. The US murders millions in Vietnam? And there's a big monument to the 60,000 americans who died killing those millions. The US kills over a couple of million arabs? Yawn. A few Muslims kill 12 French cartoonists? Wow! Muslims are demented animals. Kill them all. (That, by the way, is what is called racism.)

The whole world is reorganizing itself. New alliances are forming. Economies are changing dramatically. The west is in decline both militarily and economically. And Canada has tied its future to that of the West.

The west has superiority in only one respect - nuclear weapons.

The west has superiority in only one respect - nuclear weapons.

And I would not count on that lasting forever. If China got it in their head that they wanted a nuclear arsenal to counter the USA's, they could probably do it. The rockets they use for launching their spacecraft could just as easily become a fleet of ICBMs and they do have the bomb.

The letter to the moderator reminds me. We really should start a thread urging women to wear hats whenever they go anywhere. Men don't, and needn't. But women should. I believe it was Paul who said woman's hair is a snare and a delusion. Man's hair is a glory unto God. Just so. And I think that should put an end to abominations such as dying and tinting, too.
Head covering by women still required by certain branches of Orthodoxy (only when in the church sanctuary). It varies by country. Not required by the Orthodox Church in America, but required should one be dropping into an Orthodox Church in Russia.

Well, re such violence as terrorism, it developed largely by Christian nations in the twentieth century. It's always been around, of course. But it became the standard method of warfare. One of the pioneers of it was Winston Churchill who ordered the aerial bombing of defenceless Kurd villages in 1920. By 1942, terrorism had became the major strategy of all powers on all sides. This continued in Korea, Cambodia and Vietnam. In fact, since 1945, the largely Christian US has been the world's biggest terrorist.
Actually, there are older roots, even for the west. Western imperialism was based on the assumption that the imperialist belonged to a superior race, and were therefore justified in conquering others, and because Churchill saw the English-speaking peoples as the world's superior race, then one was justified in using any means, including terror, to kill them. Hitler was actually quite mainstream in his thinking.
Disagree. Homo Sapiens is a violent animal. The Europeans were simply the first to acquire modern weapons (side effect of scientific discoveries). The modern weapons are extremely good at killing people.

Do you really believe that non-Europeans never fought with each other? That they wouldn't have used such weapons if they had had them?

The French government has just arrested a comedian for writing something on facebook that suggests sympathy for the moslem side. He faces the possibility of seven years in prison. So now we know the rules in France. They just love free speech so it's perfectly legal and even admired to spread hatred of Muslims. But if you suggest liking them, you risk losing seven years of your life.

So much all the nonsense about free speech and freedom of the press.
It was grotesque for the French to arrest that guy. Free speech indeed!

Wasn't it the west that initiated the violent penetrations of the medium (middle earth orthodox) that lied between the east and the west? That's enough to stir any veil or other like fabrication that can't connect the fringes ... loose ends as fringe, boundary people that observe from beyond polity? Oh yes they labelled these crusades in the honour of the martyred Levite ... a miss'd truth of Hugh's\huge proportion as the Shadow of doubt there's any truth left to the wholly lyre ... altruism is beyond us ... remaining for when you cross the line ... or the Hebrew say; states it is pas'over time ... and one scans the unknown quickly as flashback, or reflective epiphany if you wish that label. To hide truth ... many perspectives of metaphors may be needed to see the devious in the word ... or the word in spectre of lights. Almost like seeing all peoples mental images through the eye of a fly ... or spied Ur ... if you take Mummies view ... but she too is all wrapped up ... as few men would admit to the mudder of all individualized minds ... and thus it is unseen ... unheard and unknown to modern gods or war fair ... in the NDs balanced reaction and we're all wise ... or dead to our emotional bents!

At one time this was inscribed in clay (cle, or cla'?) and then later it went on de lamb to make the record easier for pilgrimages.

In the world of word or gods if you wish ... this is infinitely pluralized ... just for fun da huss eL! Who's husslin? That'd be the dark ladie ... an un-sext-ed gatherer of junked minds ... the "i" of the gravid one as imaginary domains in quantum space? De tail NG too small to see?

Some people do not believe in underlying factors leading to a continuum of LOGOS, logic in a god of understanding or wisdom? The Latin tongue expressed this as aD'm -ism. Those that don't believe what's at hand became isolated m'n-kind ... behind the Wahl ... but perspective from the other's ID differs ... at least until conjugational essence is shared ... and then there is something to think about among the deep 6. Two old ph'arts, 2 children and 2 mellowing in the white noise ... pure chaos of the presence of adulteration ... and thus excesses and polity in the church ... just count all the half siblings and step parents. That's just half the problem in life ... dealing with the pain of unbalanced psychopaths that feel nothing ... not even surrounding crap, what the've left as a wastland ... they don't even believe anything is foul ... but learning what they didn't know in the first place ... mostly everything craped out in the colon ... that upright in the field of being above the underlying support system ... Hadassah ... those buttes or booty overlooked as chit? Wee things in the'de tailing? Travailling icons of letter's'm'n ... sometimes known as abstract Semites ... or abstract constructs of thought ... mnen O'nights with dark mental objectives?

Remember who bier'd it ... was the flat out book as opened ... difficult for those hoo don read into anything profound or deep 6'd as Mark Twain ... Deux of satyr?

Chinese history is full of uprisings, guerilla movements, and violent suppressions, not to mention imperialism. All of it predating European contact. While they managed to maintain a fairly consistent civilization through it all, as opposed to the rise and fall cycle we see in Europe, it was by no means a peaceful, stable civilization. IOW, anyone suggesting that use of violence and terror is a European invention is way off base. And the Chinese, while they never invented the gun, certainly possessed some fairly sophisticated weaponry (rocket launchers, repeating crossbows, and such) and used them to deadly effect in their wars. Not to mention their neighbours and one-time rulers the Mongols who perfected cavalry and archery to a degree that made many European medieval and even later powers look like bit players.

(Haven't much to say on terrorism. Just wanted to say good to see you here EasternOrthodox!)
Hi Jae! I am pretty busy and have only come by on occasion. How are you doing? Hope life is treating you and your family well.

Graeme was right about one thing. Even though I retired, I have even less time than before!

(Thanks - life is good. I'm doing an MDiv now in seminary which is fun - interesting - and challenging! A few others and I are also setting up a missional community in the neighborhood of my church. My wife and son are working hard and also enjoying life. How about you and yours? How are you keeping active in your retirement years (which is great to hear - congratulations!))

(In my signature? No - that's to someone else's. I generally link to interesting articles I'm made aware of via Fcbk.)
Your personal Facebook or the United Church forum? I see you are still busy here. Nearly 3500 posts. I simply don't have time. Nor is the environment very congenial. Everyone seemed to disagree with me.

I am a co-blogger at another site and it keeps me very busy.

(My personal Fcbk. I actually don't like that I'm the top poster here in terms of number of posts made. It is a sign to me of unhealthy life balance. I'm not saying at all that that would necessarily hold true for anyone else who had the most posts - but in my case it does. What is your other site about?)

They even had to cross the Dar din ells ... a genre of working waters!
