Was listening to a CBC interview about vaping yesterday (White Coat, Black Art - http://www.cbc.ca/radio/whitecoat/spin-science-and-e-cigarettes-1.3224852 ) - interested as it's becoming more common and a few vape lounges & stores have popped up in my neighbourhood. I don't know much about it myself. Some patients in hospital want to use e-cigarettes - I don't think we really have a policy on it yet, but no doubt something is in the works.

I was REALLY surprised to hear a familiar cardiac surgeon come on to talk about his entrepreneurial business involvement with an e-cigarette business. That perked up my ears for sure!

Anybody have experience with vaping? What are your thoughts?
 
I think it's being promoted as too safe. I would say better than smoking, but I still don't want the 2nd and 3rd hand effects from the stuff.

This. It may be healthier for the consumer, but what about those around them. My Dad smoked a pipe which was technically safer than cigs since pipe smokers don't usually inhale, but that also meant more smoke getting puffed out into the room for my family to inhale. Fortunately, he quit when I was still fairly young (late teens or early twenties, IIRC) so my lungs have hopefully recovered.
 
I would definitely prefer that they not be allowed in public places, including workplaces, restaurants, stores, bars until such time as more research is completed.

I have an acquaintance who was smoking them at a restaurant when I was away at work and I didn't like having to breathe in the cloud.

Even for the consumer, there are issues. I know of people who choose to not quit completely as it's 'totally safe' and I've also heard some people think that it's a healthy way to relax.
I would prefer to see the image be seen as a less harmful smoking option, rather than a healthy option.

I don't even know if it's legal to do that here or not. I haven't seen anyone do it inside.

There's been some debate and discussion here in Ontario about whether e-cigs and vaping should come under the provincial law banning smoking in indoor public spaces. It was supposed to be added to the smoking ban as of Jan. 1 but that has been delayed so the government can look into it further.

In ontario, the laws for smoking in public places did not cover e-cigarattes/vapes. As of Jan 1, 2016 a new law was to come into place, which covers the use of them in public places and the sale of same. Other laws and enforcement items are still to come into affect from what I can find.

I looked, city bylaws here, not a province wide. It basically treats them the same as cigarettes, although one can sample them in a place that is selling them.

See the Star article I linked. The ban has been delayed, though restricting sales of e-cigs to minors is still going into effect.

Ontario used to be like that (each city having its own by-laws) but the province finally stepped in to make it uniform across the province. Having it under municipal control raised a lot of red flags, such as bars in cities with a ban losing business as smokers went to the next city over which didn't have a ban yet.

The same with Alberta, but it looks like the province hasn't caught up with the vaping issue yet, so some cities stepped up again.

ETA: AHS also has banned them inside their premises, so there's at least something province-wide.

That's what their main use should be IMO.

I someone wants to take the risks and use them long-term while not harming anyone else though, I'm ok with that. I think they should at least know there are risks though.
 
It was interesting to hear Dr. Bhatnagar comment that he spent about 6 months looking into the available health literature before going ahead with his investment - with the caveat that if future info indicated harm then he'd be out in a flash. He's a thorough guy. I think he was also commenting about the tar & other carcinogens in tobacco being most harmful to health - and these are not present in vape liquids. It will be interesting to see what time tells us about this. Also interesting to note that big tobacco seems behind this - replacement product as cigarette smoking continues to decline in North America - not surprising really.

I agree with limitation on where they can be used and age of use. Health issue aside, it seems intrusive to be blowing 'vapour' in others space.

My husband bought one when they first came out - the novelty wore off as the old ones were a bit finicky to refill - it is steam and you can't smell it. The machine heats up the water and nicotine liquid stuff. I sat right beside it and could not smell a thing and neither could anyone else. I think people just want to come down hard on smokers/ recovering smokers, no matter what they do. Especially those who've never smoked. Give it a rest. It is not easy to quit people need to ease up. If it is outside on the sidewalk I can't imagine anyone having an objection because it has no smell and dissipates into the air along with much worse things in the air already. Inside I can understand - even with no smell, there would be water and traces of nicotine in the air. Not a big deal but if people object - somebody's going to object no matter how safe it is. If it's not 100% safe, take it outside. But it is a lot safer than smoke. Steam with nicotine in it. It's probably not even bad for you except that the nicotine is addictive - but not in trace amounts in the air.

Did you hear about the woman in NY who had drunk driving charges against her dropped because she has a rare condition called, something like "Brewery syndrome" where her own body converts food into alcohol! She was pulled over at a road check and smelled like alcohol but she wasn't "tipsy". How's she supposed to go anywhere without someone judging and complaining!
