Our lives are controlled by people we've never heard of. American foreign policy is set by them. They own ALL the private news media - and ALL of our private news sources exist to publish propaganda and, often , lies. The decline of news media over the last 40 years has been appalling - and it wasn't all that good before that. The only papers I trust are The Guardian, Haaretz (Israel). The Independent (Britain) can be good, and Al Jazeera is actually far better than it gets credit for. The National Post is dreadful. The New York Times is often dishonest.
Most of the "think tanks" are owned by the very wealthy, and exist to spread propaganda. In the US, they are even prime designers of foreign policy. The Democrats, the Republicans are beyond salvaging. Both are owned by the very rich. The same is true of the Liberals and Conservatives.

We have become a world ruled by oligarchies - a class of the very rich that is our new aristocracy. It's true in US, China, Russia...Putin and Obama are very similar.

The very rich will generally support BOTH Liberals and Conservatives in Canada.

Irving is more noticeable because New Brunswick is small. But all provinces are the same in that respect.

Incidentally, the Irvings rank somewhere the top five or six for wealth in Canada. You may not have heard of them; but they are working for a oil pipeline near you.

I think Jim Pattison owns some TV stations, sports organizations, numerous big stores. Heck, he even owns the Guinness Book of world Records empire now. How's that for an ambitious ego? He's up there in the top 5. Out here, many things are named after him. He does quite a bit of philanthropy. I don't know if he's involved in oil or not but he is economically influential. Politically, too, I would guess.

Philanthropy? Never get fooled by it. Irving does the same. And he makes sure it gets publicized. It covers up for the fact that most of them pay little to no taxes. Diane Francis, a tax expert I knew when we were both on CBC, and later editor of the Financial Post, told me that she worked for several of these people, showing them how to hide their profits in offshore bank accounts. They live in a world in which only greed matters. Almost all wars of the past century and more have been fought, and millions killed or mutilated, to satisfy their greed.

aren't they ending up doing a good service, because too much money in the gov't means more inflation?

Does this cos phat heds of just figgy duff? Regimented fruit cakes as a choqan thingy ... choqan bean a Hebrew concoction ... in the round as a beg aL? That old term for corporeal welfare ...

No. All that money in the government doesn't mean more inflation. If it did, we could all do this country a great service by refusing to pay taxes. When the rich don't pay their taxes, you get a rising wage gap which means, for most people, a declining standard of living and, eventually, widespread poverty with no relief and no recovery because the very rich put their stolen money into countries where they can make more money due to cheap labour, no taxes, and no environmental regulations. That's a major part of the reason we're having a recession - along with dangerous and even illegal spending by our friendly, neighbourhood banks. We should have done what Iceland did - let them go broke. Or even put them in Jail. Instead, we went deeper into debt so they could give themselves in bigger bonuses. Now, we get stuck with the recession while they are making their biggest profits in history.

This is much like the depression of the 1930s which was profitable to big business - like Eaton's - because they could cut salaries, holidays, retirement benefits, smash unions.... There's a good book on it called Report of the Royal Commission on Price Spreads and Mass Buying. (a Canadian government publication).
