N-o-o-o-o Just heard this morning that my niece is undergoing diagnosis for the same eye disease that I deal with. Inheritance can really suck. Maybe she will have some other eye problem,. Time will tell.

I'm feeling a bit guilty for sharing genetic information around the family.. Trying to be more logical because my head knows it isn't my fault!

Did you inherit your eye disease?

for decades a family member swore that their father wasn't their father (implying that their mother had had an affair).
Eventually a DNA test was done, and lo & behold, their father was their father.

The individual ended up with macular degeneration, the same as their father. They weren't impressed that they had received that from them.
 
I have been losing weight (30 lbs) since May 1st 2025.....it was determined that food does no longer pass through to my stomach but sits for days until I vomit. The hole that my food passes through can not get through as it's very very tiny now.
I have just had a stent put into my duodenum but it is a temporary solution.
Eventually, very soon, I will be having an operation called, The Whipple Procedure, in which several of my organs will be removed in a 9 hour operation.
I have been in University Hospital in London for 2 weeks now.....will be going home temporarily and then returning to University Hospital London.
My family is scrambling for genetic markers..,
Sigh.....it's going to be a rough journey.....if you care to, you can look it up...... The Whipple Procedure.
My whole life just changed instantly.

I had a friend who had the Whipple due to pancreatic cancer twenty? years ago.

Is there anything we can do for you?

Pray? If you do. I will be reading more on wondercafe2 than posting as I adjust to my new way of life.
I am told I don't have cancer in my pancreas, but still my team says they believe I have it in my duodenum,...the pathology report has not come in yet, 7 days later. I will have the head and tail removed from the pancreas, my gall bladder removed, stomach ( partial), the duodenum, the bile duct, and whatever else is affected. Because there is a large concentration of organs that are surrounding these organs they have to be lifted out of the way.i will have an opening cut from below my heart downward that will expose alot......high risk of infection as opposed to using a laser surgery that has its own risk. The good news is I do have a surgeon who has a very good reputation for this procedure and my family is being very supportive......sigh
 
Suggesting that your mother cheated on your dad doesn't sound very conducive to a happy family life! I'm not overly happy with this inheritance either - but it isn't their fault (and therefore not mine either). Quite frankly, I would have preferred getting some of the money as my inheritance, but that went to my sister.
Both my parents were developing vision problems by their 60's but were never tested. Actually I don't know when it became possible to identify the various macular diseases. There are 2.5 million Canadians with macular degeneration. Only 20,000 with one of the several versions of macular dystrophy.

That sounds like a dreadful condition to have. Is it usually genetic? So sorry you have to deal with it. Are you in London, Ontario or London, England for this procedure?

London Ontario.......my mother died from pancreatic cancer when she was 49, so not quite the same but somewhat the same area.
 
We have a few physical things that pass from generation to generation. I can blame my bizarre immune system on my Dad, and my arthritic hands on my Mom. Much worse, really, are the genetic mental illnesses littering my family tree.
 
@Waterfall for some of us, 30lb would hardly be noticed, for others, it would leave them very thin.

I'm not sure where you on that line but hope that you are feeling better and able to sustain weight
 
@Waterfall - very sorry to hear of your health situation - I will certainly add my prayers for you, your family & your skilled care team. I'm glad for you that a cause has been found for your dramatic weight loss & a plan is now in place, scary as it probably seems. I'm glad too that you've found your way to a skilled surgeon with good Whipple experience - seems you will be in good hands with that team - literally and figuratively!

Crappy being in hospital. Hope you are being kept comfortable and feel supported during this time of trial.

Thank-you Carolla......I have opted for something temporary for now...
I had a duodenal stent put in a couple days ago, which will probably only last a couple months! It will buy me a bit of freedom as I come to terms with having this surgery, give me time to update wills and even register for Maid......should I decide I want it.....and a bit of quality time. But eventually I will have the surgery.

@Waterfall - I appreciate your update. Glad to hear options arose for you. Lots on your plate at the moment .... one day, one bit at a time, that's my mantra these days. Will continue to hold you in prayer.
