I didn’t know that about snow tires! The snow gods found us and what a pile we now have! Our snow plough service keeps not showing up. So I keep sending complaints. We pay almost $1000 for the season so I expect some service.
I think it depends on the manufacturer, and maybe just on the guys running the machine. They were almost undriveable in the wet for the first 30km or so. Now they're great. On dry pavement they would have been fine, but the combination of whatever release oil they use in the factory during the mould process and the cool wet weather we had last week was borderline scary.

Sexy wheels, though. That makes up for it.

Interesting. I get mine from a local tire place. Maybe they do something to deal with it or use a brand that doesn't have that? My sets are not new anyhow. Forget when I bought the ones on the CR-V but the Civic's were bought in Jan. 2023 when I got it.

Maybe it's the brand. They're Continentals, so they're not cheap and they review well. Most people wouldn't notice it in the dry. I took them out for the first time in a light, cold rain. It's a turbo motor, so that won't help, but I drive like a grandpa now. I was legitimately afraid to pull in front of oncoming traffic with what would normally be lots of space.

Well, not so much about snow tires, but low profile tires. One of my cars years ago, came with them and they were the most awful tires for even rain or light snow .....they slid all over the place for stops and we're only good for sunny days.

If you want to see if your snow tires still have enough tread....use the quarter trick.
Stick the moose side in the tread with its nose down, if the nose of the moose is covered, you're good. If it's not covered....not so good.

Low profile should mostly break your back - it has little to do with grip and if anything, *should* be grippier in summer because they are generally performance tires that wear faster and are supposed to grip in the corners. But yes, once the temps drop, they become hockey pucks. I look for summer or all season tires that are good in the wet - your big danger in the spring, summer and fall is aquaplaning or skidding in the wet. Dry performance is generally pretty close between tires. Then they are off in November, hopefully before they become hockey pucks.

This is turning into a good thread about tire choices. I look forward to Redbaron's greeting tomorrow morning.

I got home late from a church council meeting that went into overtime. We're in a new building so things come up that need to be addressed. Now my phone gave me a reminder for my dentist appointment at 1:30. I'd totally forgotten. Thankfully it's close by

s**t, we should have talked about tires. You saw my car, the Impreza. Looks like the same car as yr wife's. Tires are both expensive and problematic. I do not love the low profile tires.

I like Imprezas. I almost bought one. Low profile tires are for kids with working and well-oiled spines. You and I have no business using them, but they're also a function of the wheels you have.

And I have the wheels I have due to a need to beat every car from a stop. My sister's spark does a great job in the lower gears. Impreza almost as good as Prelude.
