Canadian election and other political stuff

I was going to post in here after yesterday's election in BC. Apparently one of the people I have on ignore revived this thread.

Things in the BC Legislature will be, well interesting....

The riding where I vote is one of the very close ridings. There are fewer than 50 votes separating the NDP and Conservative candidates, with the NDP ahead for now. That being said if you count the Green and NDP votes together more people did not vote Conservative than who did.

This city reelected it's well respected NDP incumbent. It also elected a man who is a former city councillor. He was the youngest councillor elected and is still quite young. He's also the first black MLA in many years (decades?)

In other ridings, the NDP won because an Indepentent candidate, usually former BC United, split the right vote.

It will be a chaotic period no doubt. At this point, NDP are ahead. The Greens hold two seats. If they work with the NDP, the NDP will lead the province.

Of course, the fat lady hasn't sung yet. Mail in ballots have to be counted. That will be later this week. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

This has been a weird election process. The BC United leader took his party out of the race just before the writ was dropped and after his party had many candidates set up to run. He basically hung them out to dry. He was also responsible for changing the party name from BC Liberal to the dumb name that didn't really fly.

The Conservative leader is not without controversy. He has spoken out against the covid vaccine and even about the pandemic. He has candidates who have done or said controversial things. For example, the Conservative candidate in the riding where I voted was a physician (GP) who is anti-vax.

The NDP leader replaced Horgan who was well respected and a strong leader. He really hasn't lead well, especially in comparison to his predecessor.

Bring out the popcorn?

And now I am watching the Conservative leader's speech from last night. He will be a very divisive force in a minority government.

He would be a divisive force no matter his role. Bring on the hate, the conspiracies, the fear. Ideology and greed and self-entitlement seem to be prominent in provincial and federal politics. I thought Ford restricting building bike lanes was regrettable. Now been Ontario is accepting applications for penned dog hunting. An area is fenced off. One or more prey animals (rabbits, coyotes, or foxes) are placed in there, and dogs are released to go after the prey.

Recently the public learned that one of the conditions in the contract to build a luxury spa in what was a public park is the province providing something like 2500 parking spaces. Failure to do so could cost taxpayers many millions of dollars.

There seems to be a contest between Smith and Ford for chief crazy.

The biggest loser in this BC election is the media.

All the smears and attacks on the Conservatives by CTV, Global, CBC etc and yet still it's a squeaker.

I hope Rustad doesn't get to be part of that crazy. I don't think he's as bad as them, but still. The all candidates meeting in the riding where we vote apparently had a bunch of Convoy people. They were being disruptive during the meeting. Have we really come to a place where bullying and bulls**t are appropriate parts of politics?

Yeh. It tends to be biased towards the truth. If Global and CBC are similar, then it is probably true.

Not to mention the first thing people like Hitler did was silence the journalists. In an ideal world (I know it's not ideal), the journalists can hold leaders to account. People who aspire to be dictators don't want that.

That is why Pierre wants to silence the CBC.

I wish someone would silence him a bit. We don't need to see him 30 times in one evening. Once or twice would be enough. Hopefully it was because of the BC election and we'll see less of him until the actual federal election.

Divisive is the approach if you hate the sense of getting it together coopted for greater good ... why humanity is temporal ... id'll pass ... and then the excitement settles so God can act dead ... rest a bit! That's relief from stress ... life is like that ... drives one to leave!

Is suicide a factor in humanity? Between NB and PEI it seems to be a concern ... when there is no other solution ... the final resolve ... eliminate it? It appears manifests in great powers that some put forth blindly ... integrally unaware ... the received total ignorance of what obvious and made oblivion ... man made end?

Alas ... the essence goes on as what else? Genre ... some say spirit of excitement until they see the edge ... very thin!

Here is the first of a series of posts about the winning Conservatives in BC from the Maple.
Brent Chapman, the new BC Conservative MLA in Surrey South, has been one of the most controversial and extreme candidates to emerge during the recent election campaign.

Chapman, a character actor best known for minor roles in films like Freddy Versus Jason and the The Lizzie McGuire Movie, was repeatedly hammered for past comments accusing Muslims of inbreeding, comparing public health policies to the Nazi Holocaust and making statements questioning whether mass shootings in Sandy Hook and Quebec City really happened.

Chapman, who also faced scrutiny for posting anti-refugee content and content instructing critics of Donald Trump on how to “kill themselves,” also appeared on a podcast where the host claimed residential schools are a “massive fraud” and also referenced conspiracy theories revolving around the United Nations.

In that interview a month before the election, Chapman estimated “there are probably 45, maybe 50, ‘Freedom People’ that are running for this party” and criticized the media for portraying them as “wack jobs.”

Here is the second.
Another newly elected BC Conservative MLA, Jordan Kealy (Peace River North), has repeatedly posted about chemtrails on his social media accounts. One post from his farm’s Facebook page warned of a supposed “government plan to eat bugs,” “control the weather” and “spray things in the air,” which was accompanied by photos of vapour trails from commercial airplanes.

One day before the election, Kealy responded to a post on Facebook asking if he was going to “stop the chemtrails” by suggesting the issue falls under “federal jurisdiction.”

Here is the third.
While it’s so far too early to call the results in Kelowna Centre, the leading candidate Kristina Loewen has also been prolific in sharing conspiratorial content in a Facebook group called “Reject NWO (New World Order) BS,” including references to conspiracies about 15 minute cities, the World Economic Forum and the United Nations.
